MOUNT LASSEN/LAVA BEDS GETAWAY
September 20-23

Are you ready for fun?  Are you ready for adventure?
Then sign up now for Don Girard’s excellent travel weekend!
This is not an official FaGowee trip, so all your dealings will be directly with Don.

The itinerary:

Thursday, September 20, 2007
   7:45 am - Leave Sacramento
9:00 am - Meet in Truckee for a hearty,
leisurely breakfast at the Wagon Train Restaurant, which is on Commercial Row, about one block

from the Truckee Hotel (actual address is 10080 Donner Pass Road; take the central Truckee exit to get there)
   10:00 am - Leave Truckee
Stop in Chester for lunch, and then we’ll take a 20 minute drive to Mount Lassen and hike down to Bumpus Hell.   And watch out!  The volcano
could erupt again like it did in 1915!  We’ll watch the hissing fumaroles and boiling mud pots.  (And you will be amazed… this definitely beats
       Yellowstone!)
Then we backtrack a bit to the Lassen Mineral Lodge, This is where we’ll be staying the night.  It’ll be $87/night with two or 3 beds
(which, if you share a room, will work out to $43.50 per person or even less!)

5:00 pm - After we check in we head for the funky bar/restaurant across the street, and relax with libations, all the time admiring the picture of the
half-naked lady.  This will be followed by yet another hearty meal!

Friday, September 21, 2007
9:00 am - Hearty, leisurely breakfast at the neat old ham and egg restaurant next to the Ranch.
10:30 am - We’ll head out to the lava beds
Past Bumpus Hills, to the Devastated Area, where we’ll be Happy not Devastated!  We’ll admire the
pink rocks and hope they don’t slide down on us.  We can’t stop because it is scary and maybe even Dangerous near those rocks!   We’ll pass
through Hat Creek and stop for groceries in Burney.  If you want, we can visit the waterfalls in Burney, where real water boils out of the side of
the cliff.  We’ll admire all the volcanoes along the way and then in Canby for gas and a hearty picnic lunch.

Around 4:00 or 4:30 pm -
We should pull into Lava Beds.  This’ll give us time to visit the Visitors Center and check out the cave next to it.  After
we set up camp in either RV or tent at the Indian Wells campgrounds, a safe haven after that scary Devastated Area!   We’ll prepare for yet
another hearty (potluck) dinner.  Then it will be campfire and ghost stories.   Cost: $10/entrance fee, $10/night.  Trailers that are under 30 feet
are allowed right by the tents, so we can use the trailers for cooking.

Saturday, September 22, 2007
After breakfast, we’ve got a day of exploration and discovery before us at Lava Beds.  You may never have another chance like this to view such magnificent cinder and spatter cones, pit craters and lava tubes caves.  Too bad we won’t have time to explore all 600 caves!  We’ll also drive over and check out Captain Jack’s Stronghold.  In between, we’ll have a relaxing lunch with wine at the campground.  Then, of course, we’ll have another hearty dinner, followed by frivolity and maybe games.

Sunday, September 23, 2007
Delicious breakfast, break camp, then mosey down to Redding to check it out.  We’ll cross the Sundial Bridge, explore the new exhibits at the
Turtle Bay Exploration Park.  Yummy lunch.  Then sail on home and start our diets!

Space is limited!  Hurry to sign up!  Contact Don at 638-7804 to reserve a spot.

Then,

mail your check, made out to Don Girard ($87, or half of $87 or a third of $87, depending) and mail to Don at:
P.O. Box 338
Rancho Cordova, CA 95741

Lhasa, Tibet & China - When we heard that the first passenger train from Beijing to Lhasa Tibet opened in July 2006, we wanted to be one of the first tour groups to take the trip. What an experience this will be for FWSA adventurers. We have excursion options in Beijing and Shanghai for those who took the previous FWSA China trip with exciting alternative places to visit. See the flier for the sites and cities covered by the 15 and 21 day tours.

We take participants based on first deposit in, first signed up.
We will not take deposits for the Tibet/China trip until August 20, 2006.

Special Announcements

THANK YOU FaGowees
From Shannon Powell

I have attended the Sacramento FaGowee Abalone Dive & Dine weekends for the past 5 years, and I have enjoyed each and every one of them.  It has been an honor to be accepted and included in the group over those years.  You people are amazing!!!  Your friendliness has been overwhelming.

I have been honored to dive with some great folks and help bring in a good supply of abalone for the Saturday night dinners (feasts).  On the side, I also enjoy a bit of fishing, both with a fishing pole and spear gun, on my vacations with you.

This past dive, I lost or misplaced two relatively expensive good fillet knives.  My father-in-law (Jim) made an announcement at the Saturday night abalone dinner asking that they be returned if someone happened to find them – no questions asked.

Later, after things had quieted down a bit, to my complete and utter surprise, while I was sitting around our campfire that evening with my family, Adrianne Parks came up behind me and handed me a cup.  After we had left to come back to our campsite, Adrianne had taken up a collection to help my purchase some replacement fillet knives.  That cup contained the donations from the FaGowee members and guests.

To everyone who donated toward this collection, I want to thank each and every one of you from the bottom of my heart.  And especially to Adrianne: I thank you for your thoughtfulness and friendship.  You’re a wonderful lady and your thoughts and generosity will never be forgotten.

Not every group would have thought of, let alone donated to replace someone else’s loss.  Actions like this make you such a great group, and make me glad to be affiliated with you all.  Your friendship is truly appreciated.

From my heart and soul, I again thank each and every one of you.

 Shannon Powell

Do We Have Your Correct Email Address???

The club sent out a lot of email in July. If you didn't get them, it is because we don't have your correct email address. WE are sending out a lot of updated information that isn't in your newsletter and we don't want you to miss out.

If your email has changed, please contact Andrea NOW!!  Word will be passed on to membership chairperson, Karen Fountain-Benedict.  If you have other changes, such as address or phone number, be sure to contact Karen directly.

Pictures Wanted!!!
Bob McDonald

Take pictures of any FaGowees having fun so I can include them in our photo albums. The albums are brought to each and every FaGowee function with the photos of our past events, and I depend on you, the general membership, to supply those photos for the albums.

So...get those pictures taken so I can add them to our archives.

For the sake of ease in creating and displaying the photo pages, I’d prefer the prints to be 4”x 6” in size. Also, I would like them in groups of 6 so that they will take up a whole page in the album.

If you have any questions, or photos you’d like to part with, please contact me at 817-4277.

I’m Looking For Any Pics of Club Activities:

Fall Foothills, Goldpoint, Hopscotch, Halloween Party,
Bike Ride & General Snow Pics.

FaGOWEE FUNCTION OR EVENT SIGN-UP LATE FEES
(Approved and Adopted at the Executive Board Meeting on July 11, 2006)

SIGN-UP LATE FEES: On each and every advertised FaGowee club event published in the Snow News newsletter, a sign-up due date will be listed as well as the member and non-member prices to attend that function or event. Any person who signs up and submits their payment for attendance after that published due date will be assessed a 50% late fee penalty. In addition, any person who does not sign up at all to attend a function or event and just shows up at the door will be assessed a 100% late fee penalty (payable in full at that time) before being allowed admittance to that function or event.

FaGOWEE EVENT / TRIP REFUND POLICY
Revised, Approved and Adopted at the Executive Board Meeting, October 8, 2003

  1. The following Refund Policy applies to any Club event for which a fee is charged.

  2. You will automatically receive a 100% refund fur any trip or event cancelled by the Club.

  3. If you cancel and someone takes your place from the waiting list, you will receive a refund of the amount you paid, less a cancellation fee. The cancellation  fee will be $10.00 or 10% of the event/trip fee- whichever is more, unless a specific cancellation fee is advertised for the event/trip.

  4. If you cancel and there is no waiting list, or no one on the list takes your place, you will receive a refund of the amount you paid less a cancellation fee and less any expenses that the Club incurs due to your cancellation.

  5. If you arrange for someone not on the waiting list to take your place, you will be responsible for full payment to the Club plus any transfer fees or costs the Club incurs because of the change. Other money transactions are between you and your replacement. You must provide that replacement with a note for the trip leader or you must confirm the replacement directly with the trip leader prior to the event/trip. The person who submits payment must request all refunds from the Executive Board in writing within 60 days after the completion of the event/trip. The Executive Board will review the final financial report from the event/trip and may approve refunds in accordance with this refund policy.

  6. Any member may appeal to the Executive Board for refunds greater than provided by this policy if special circumstances warrant.

  7. There will be no refund for events that are designated as "Fund Raisers" unless they are cancelled or rescheduled by the Club.

Horseback Riding??
Line Dance Lessons??
Comedy Club??
Kayaking??
Bike Ride??
Apple Hill??

Which one of these activities do YOU want to share with other FaGowees???

The FaGowees have a new policy of having members host fun activities without having to publicize them in the newsletter or get board approval. As long as the event doesn’t conflict with a major FaGowee event, even the sky’s not the limit
(if you’re a sky diver, that is!)

You may have noticed Kati White’s email in July in which she invited FaGowees to come camping with her.
But it could be anything:

a bike ride or kayak adventure you’d like to share with others.
Maybe, you’re looking for others to go on a ski trip, go waterskiing or golfing.
Or maybe attend the Music Circus, a play or concert or spend the day in San Francisco or maybe just take a cooking class.
Maybe you live out of town and want to give FaGowees an opportunity to do something in your neck of the woods.

There are no limits.

Maybe you want to go somewhere or try something new; this is a good opportunity to find like like-minded souls. All you need to do is figure out the dates, costs, extras, like sharing a meal afterwards. You may want to limit the number of attendees; it is all up to you. Then email Andrea Woelfle and your announcement will be emailed to the entire membership! We would like it for you to come to the next social meeting to present your plan, if at all possible. This is a way for you to share your interests and to make the FaGowees a more fun club.

It is also easier to get an official FaGowees event going. You can just e-mail the club president and present your idea. It is possible for the board to discuss it by email and approve it without waiting for a board meeting.

A small contingent of FaGowees are responsible for running the club and planning activities.
This is your chance to get involved!!

River Cats Game Recap

On August 23, ten FaGowees helped the River Cats win 3-2 and maintain their first place standing
in the Pacific Conference with our vigorous cheering. To maintain our sustenance during this
vigorous activity, we scarfed down $1 hot dogs and $1 ice creams and choked on the prices of drinks.

A good time was had by all!!

2007 Abalone Dine and Dive

The 2007 Abalone Dive and Dine, as usual, was a yummy, relaxing, and fun-filled   long weekend for the 46 FaGowees and friends.   Most participants rolled in Thursday, set up camp and immediately got to work socializing.  To create some excitement, the Baden-Schmitt contingent were confronted by an interloper (fortunately, not of the bear persuasion) but then successfully claimed their spot   Helene managed to upstage them the next night by attracting the cute fire department and an ambulance, but was fully recovered the next morning.  Ellen showed off her cute new dog, Mason, who purrs when his back is rubbed. I kid you not!
The loungers lounged, the fisherman (Wally, Jim and Miyoko, Eric S., and the Parks) fished (very successfully) and the day trippers tripped off to Mendocino, the lighthouse, Glass Beach, the Great Redwoods, and Fort Bragg.
Finally, it was time for the great feast.  Thanks to our great divers: Shannon and Chasen Powell, Ellen Page, Lila McKissick and a guest of Jim V, Eric.  Adrianne Parks also pitched in.  There was more than enough abalone for all, thanks to our dedicated cooking staff Jan McKissick and new member, Mike Cobb.  Jackie Chesi again made her California-famous salad and Katie White made her famous salad a la Costco.  Myra Dal Bello whipped up scrumptious garlic bread and donated wonderful hors d’oeuvre, and Joe Woelfle barbequed the best chicken ever (OK, OK, so this writer is prejudiced!)  And best of all, there was home-made vanilla ice cream, hand churned by Nancy Glebov, a very special donation along with her banana cabbage slaw.   But virtually everybody pitched in; cleaning, pounding, serving, cleaning up, group fire building (Thanks, Eric S.!) or just being charming.  Special thanks go to Jim Van Riper for all his hard work in every department and his wisdom and to our fearless Prez, Jon Johnson.

Adrianne took up a collection for Shannon who had $150 worth of abalone knives stolen.  Shannon was very grateful and very touched; thanks to all of you who contributed.
We’ve got the same sites reserved for the same week next year and have the divers all lined up.  All we need is a trip leader!  I think it should be you!  As of now, the bonus to being leader is first pick of the camp/RV sites.
Commit to it now!
