Says I was on a cruise to Alaska so I wasn’t able to attend the Annual Mystery Car Rally this year. I hear through the grapevine that everybody really enjoyed the route, but there were some grumblings about the final destination. (Hey, you didn’t have a long drive home.) The 1st Place entrants were Marva & Mike (who opted out of hosting it for next year), 1st runner-up entrants were Sandy & Fred (who opted out due to Sandy’s employment responsibilities), and the 2nd runner-up entrants (and your planners and hosts for the 2006 Rally) were Janice Theep & Ken Howarth. Janice has appointed Eric & Shirley and Tom & Adrianne to assist them. Janice says to expect something really exciting for next year. Don Girard is planning and hosting the 3rd Annual Gold Point Ghost Town Trip to be held on October 14th to 16th. Gold Point is really an interesting place to visit if you’re interested in the Real Old West. See page 3 for the trip advertisement for all the particulars. If you go, I’ll guarantee that you will not be disappointed. I am planning a day event to get lost in the Corn Maze in Woodland on Saturday, Oct 29. We’ve been there before and we really were able to wonder “Where the FaGowee?”. See the article on page 7 for more information. My personal congratulations go to Cleveland FaGowee Renae Delvitto for being awarded the 2005 International FaGowee of the Year. Renae joined the Cleveland club on a trip to Switzerland in 2002 and has attended most of the activities of the Cleveland and the D.C. branches since then. Over the years, she’s continued to be a great impetus in making inter-branch friends and connections, which is really the mission of FaGowee’s International. Pray for an early snow on the slopes, and clear roads. READ YOUR NEWSLETTER

I
bring a photo album to each and every FaGowee function with the
photos of our past events, and I depend on you, the general
membership, to supply those photos for the albums. If you have any
pic’s of any FaGowee’s having fun, please get them to me so I can
add them to our archives. For the sake of ease in creating and
displaying the photo pages, I’d prefer the prints to be 4”x 6” in
size. If you have any questions of photos you’d like to part with,
please contact me at 916-817-4277. |

FaGowee Race Information The FaGowees race in the Sierra League, which is comprised of several ski clubs in Northern California and the Reno area. Racer levels range from low intermediate to expert. There are 10 ability levels with two age groups in each level. You race against skiers that have the age and ability as you do! Everyone is there to have fun and to improve their skiing while having a friendly competition. There are GS, slalom and one giant slalom races each season for a total of 8 races plus the NorCal and Far West finals. Races are $20 each or you can buy a race pass for about $75 (FaGowees subsidize your race pass by $25, making your membership almost free! And you also get a wonderful gift if you race 3 times in a season.) You (and your friends that show up in the morning to register for the races) get discounted lift tickets on race day! Scared to race? Don’t despair! The first race is free and there are several race clinics, including those before the first races, which are sponsored by the Sierra League. Where the FaGowee??? Are you looking for a one of a kind adventure? Why not join us as we make a journey to really get
lost and live up to the traditions of our FaGowee Forefathers. We’re
planning a trip to visit the Woodland Corn Maze and get lost in
the pathways amongst the cornfield containing 300,000 towering corn
stocks (give or take a few). The maze design is created by computer, and is then plotted out on 8 acres of land using GPS technology. Next, they spend several days “carving” the maze through the corn. It takes most people about an hour to go through the maze and reach the finish line. But if you make all the correct turns, one can actually make it in fifteen minutes. That’s not very likely though. We will plan on getting together for a time of dining and laughter after we find our way back out of the cornfield. If we get totally lost and cannot find our way out, we will plan on dining on raw corn on the cob. (I know…. that was “corny.”)

FaGowee Luau Recap Under the balmy summer skies of the Wilhagen area, 30+ Polynesian wannabee FaGowees gathered at the beautiful home of Eileen Kennedy to celebrate and offer to the ski gods the fate and future of the FaGowee Race team for the coming year. This ski team fund raiser was a booming social success as we mellowed to the musical strains of Alberto and his group of Hawaiian Music Makers. Some even danced but the hot tropical sun made the swimming pool a very popular spot. We feasted on barbecued pig and chicken with delicious side dishes including lots of yummy salads and Andrea’s delicious cheesecake bar. No one went away hungry. Of course, we had games which we fit in between our fun! First there was the “musical beach ball” game in the pool. The participants decided that they were not going to let go of their balls no matter what. Since they all cheated, we decided that the winner was to be the one that cheated the least. Congratulations, Ellen! The water balloon/towel game demonstrated that none of us have any coordination and it is a wonder we make it down the ski slopes. Apparently, Joani and Katie are the best skiers, because they were the winners. After having to interrupt our games with the luscious cheesecake bar, we forgot to resume with the watermelon seed spitting contest, so you have a whole year to practice for the next one! We saved the seeds. Andrea & Lee

Mystery Car Rally Recap This year’s car rally had a few twists not seen before. In the search for Pancho Villa’s hideout, 41 members of the posse all dressed out in sombreros and mustachios searched far and wide throughout the foothills of El Dorado and Amador County for the elusive fugitive. Thanks to the devious nature of the rally masters Laura Thompson, Karen Fontaine and Norman Benedict, everyone ended up going in circles till they arrived only one block from the starting point. The routes (there were two which crossed each other throughout the route to prevent tailgating) took us from Rancho Cordova, thru Folsom, Rescue, Coloma, the Gold Bug mine in Placerville up to Apple Hill and south to lunch at Montevina winery. During lunch, complete with Mexican music, teams were challenged to games of pin the tail on the burro, won by Marva Scott’s team, guess how many gummy worms in the tequila bottle, won by Wally Baumgartner, and a 30 second interpretation of the Mexican hat dance, won by The Hot Lips Team, Phillis Hess, Karen Clabeaux, and Jeanne Molineaux. After lunch and games and a little wine tasting the route led us thru Plymouth, Ione, and Wilton before returning to the Heritage Inn in Rancho Cordova. After a short rest and putting the horses to bed, the posse celebrated with a fantastic Mexican feast and dancing till we dropped. It was a site to behold this room full of FaGowees dressed up in their finest period costumes. After much discussion the judges Paul and Mary Merlo, awarded prizes to Shirley and Eric Schmitt as the best-dressed couple, Linda Henry as the best dressed female and Wally Baumgartner the best dressed male (he looked an awful lot like Pancho Villa himself) In the morning after everyone made a couple of passes thru the buffet line, the winners were announced. It was very close between first and third place but by a couple of points the team of Sandy Lange and Fred Conjour came out ahead of second place team of Marva Scott and Mike Hart and third place finishers Janice Theep and Ken Howarth. Because of a job re-assignment on the first place team, and the declining of the second place team, the trophy and responsibility for next year’s car rally was passed on to Janice and Ken. With their experience putting on rallies, next year’s event will be a do not miss affair. After the award ceremony it was time for the raffle which thanks to Karen Fontaine, had well over 30 prizes ranging from ski lift tickets valued over $ 120 to wine and cheese baskets to dinner for two at the Black Angus Restaurant. Because of the mountain of donations rounded up by Karen and the club member’s generosity, we raised $286.00, which along with matching funds from our club, was donated to the American Red Cross in the name of the Sacramento FaGowees for ”the hurricane Katrina relief fund”. Thanks to Paul and Mary Merlo who helped out while our team leader Laura Thompson was off to vacation in China, and to all the participants who came to this event with a have fun attitude that helped make this a successful event. |
