Prez Says

THINK SNOW… I want to welcome Andrea Woelfle on board as our Race Committee Chairperson. She will be offering her valuable knowledge and assistance to Lee Johnson in his duties as your Race Chairperson. If you have any questions or comments regarding the race team, the race schedules or racing events, please direct them to Andrea and she will be happy to assist you.

On the morning of Oct 10th, a reported 4-inches of “white stuff” fell in the mountain areas near Tahoe, and CalTrans announced the first chain requirement of the season on Hwy 50 over the Meyers grade. This is an indication that more of that “white stuff” will be here before you know it. If you haven’t done so yet, it’s about time to dig out your skis from storage, dust them off and tune ‘em up for your first run of the season.

FaGOWEE SPONSORED FUNCTIONS ONLYThe Executive Board has made a decision to place only FaGowee and FWSA sponsored notifications in all future issues of the Snow News. However, we already do have a program in place where a person can advertise their own private event or sales of anything they might want to offer to the general membership at a low cost to them. Please see the notification regarding Advertising Space in each and every issue of your newsletter for more information.

AND DON’T FORGET…

November 7 – ELECTION DAY – Read and understand the issues and candidates and exercise one of your most basic and important rights…Don’t forget to take the time to vote and let your voice be heard.

November 11 – VETERANS DAY – Remember those servicemen who cannot be home with loved ones as this holiday season begins. They are serving for you and they deserve no less than your respect and prayers. Don’t forget to take the time to thank a veteran for the freedom’s you enjoy. Without those vets, we just might be speaking Japanese or German today.

November 23 – THANKSGIVING DAY – take the time to reflect on all the things you have to give thanks for – your freedom’s, your families and loved ones, your health just to name a couple.

Pictures Wanted!!!
Bob McDonald

Summer has arrived and so has the opportunity for pictures! Take pictures of any FaGowee's having fun so I can include them in our photo albums. The albums are brought to each and every FaGowee function with the photos of our past events, and I depend on you, the general membership, to supply those photos for the albums. So...get those pictures taken so I can add them to our archives.

Currently I’m looking for pictures from Yosemite Trip & Family Picnic/Luau!

For the sake of ease in creating and displaying the photo pages, I’d prefer the prints to be 4”x 6” in size. Also, I would like them in groups of 6 so that they will take up a whole page in the album.
If you have any questions, or photos you’d like to part with, please contact me at 817-4277.

See Photos Online!!!

Snow News is published monthly for the FaGowee International, Sacramento Chapter members. Articles or photos MUST BE to Tracee Carter by the 20th of each month. You may e-mail the information to Tracee at newsletter@sacramentofagowees.org or call (509-279-8454). Special Announcements

I am accepting nominations from the membership for the 2006 Sacramento FaGowee of the Year. I will be accepting your nominations until November 15th. The winner will be announced and awarded with a special “prize” at the Annual Christmas Party on December 9th.

Please make your nomination in writing and submit them to myself or any other Executive Board Member by that date. Be sure to include your name, the name of your nominee, and a brief explanation of your reasons for why you believe your candidate should receive this honor.

Soon, I will be appointing a Selection Committee to read and consider the submitted nominations, and who will then determine the winner from those names submitted.

JOIN US ON OUR NEXT “WILSON’S WALK”
Sunday, November 12th
Diane Wilson

Last month, five hardy bravettes and braves challenged the old superstitions of Friday the 13th and hiked amongst the trails along the American River from Bradshaw Road to Watt Avenue. Suffice it to say that the superstitions were unfounded on that day as nobody fell prey to any misfortunes.

The weather gods looked down and smiled as they blessed our venture with a perfect day of warmth and sunshine. Karen Fontaine-Benedict, Jackie Chesi, Dick Parsons, Diane Wilson and Jim Van Riper enjoyed each other’s company, the many beautiful views of the river and as we viewed an abundance of wildlife as we trekked along the tree lined shoreline. We took a break at the halfway point at Watt Avenue to rest and enjoy a leisurely lunch before beginning the hike back to Diane’s home via several different trails, taking in new views and sights along the way.

This hike was the first of many to be offered in the future, so those who missed this one will have the chance to join us on the future ones.

Be sure to mark your calendars and set aside the time to join us on Sunday, November 12th, when we will be taking our second in this series of many hikes to come. This one will be an easy 2½-mile scenic hike on the Old Salmon Falls Trail north of Folsom. This trail wanders along the south fork of the American River. Join us as we travel back in time, into a bit of California’s gold rush era history, and back into your imagination of the past as we visit the site of the extinct Salmon Falls Waterfall (which was destroyed in 1955 when they built the Folsom Dam and created Folsom Lake) and the old Mormon gold mining era town site of Salmon Falls.

There is a $2.00 per vehicle parking fee at the trailhead parking lot, so we will plan to meet and carpool from Diane Wilson’s home to the trailhead parking area. If you’re interested in joining us on what promises to be an adventuresome day, please call Diane Wilson at 916-361-3140 to RSVP your intentions on attending. We’re all looking forward to seeing you there.

FaGOWEE FUNCTION OR EVENT SIGN-UP LATE FEES
(Approved and Adopted at the Executive Board Meeting on July 11, 2006)

SIGN-UP LATE FEES: On each and every advertised FaGowee club event published in the Snow News newsletter, a sign-up due date will be listed as well as the member and non-member prices to attend that function or event. Any person who signs up and submits their payment for attendance after that published due date will be assessed a 50% late fee penalty. In addition, any person who does not sign up at all to attend a function or event and just shows up at the door will be assessed a 100% late fee penalty (payable in full at that time) before being allowed admittance to that function or event.

FaGOWEE EVENT / TRIP REFUND POLICY
Revised, Approved and Adopted at the Executive Board Meeting, October 8, 2003

  1. The following Refund Policy applies to any Club event for which a fee is charged.

  2. You will automatically receive a 100% refund fur any trip or event cancelled by the Club.

  3. If you cancel and someone takes your place from the waiting list, you will receive a refund of the amount you paid, less a cancellation fee. The cancellation  fee will be $10.00 or 10% of the event/trip fee- whichever is more, unless a specific cancellation fee is advertised for the event/trip.

  4. If you cancel and there is no waiting list, or no one on the list takes your place, you will receive a refund of the amount you paid less a cancellation fee and less any expenses that the Club incurs due to your cancellation.

  5. If you arrange for someone not on the waiting list to take your place, you will be responsible for full payment to the Club plus any transfer fees or costs the Club incurs because of the change. Other money transactions are between you and your replacement. You must provide that replacement with a note for the trip leader or you must confirm the replacement directly with the trip leader prior to the event/trip. The person who submits payment must request all refunds from the Executive Board in writing within 60 days after the completion of the event/trip. The Executive Board will review the final financial report from the event/trip and may approve refunds in accordance with this refund policy.

  6. Any member may appeal to the Executive Board for refunds greater than provided by this policy if special circumstances warrant.

  7. There will be no refund for events that are designated as "Fund Raisers" unless they are cancelled or rescheduled by the Club.

It will be either Saturday or Sunday the weekend of January 13th. Exact date, time and location will be in the December newsletter.

BEACH BLANKET BABYLON in San Francisco in the spring.  I may turn it into a weekend event by combining it with hiking the coast, Angel Island or seeing the Mountain Play at Mount Tam.  Email me your thoughts.  Details will be in later newsletters.

Discount Tickets

Lift ticket prices just keep going up. The year most Tahoe resorts will be charging from $3 to $13 more for lift tickets during XMAS week and the holiday weekends. But there is a way to lower your tickets costs. Each year the club offers members the chance to purchase lift tickets to the most popular North Tahoe resorts at a discount of $4 to $13 off the normal ticket price. These tickets are also good during holidays for a discount of up to $18.

Members who purchased tickets last year should have already received their order forms. For other members who would like to participate, an order form is available on the discount ticket web site, or contact me via phone or e-mail and I’ll send you an order form. Order forms must be received back by 11/10/2006 to guarantee your order. You can also purchase tickets throughout the season while supplies last. And the best part is, you can turn in your tickets at the end of the season by the posted deadline for a credit towards tickets next year.

At this time I have tentative price information for all areas except for Homewood.

Alpine Meadows – $41 discount tickets. The regular price will be $46 and $55 during holidays.

Homewood – $36 discount tickets (estimate). Last year’s regular weekend price was $44.

Northstar-at-Tahoe/Sierra-at-Tahoe – $51 discount tickets. The regular price will be $63 and $66 during holidays. You get an $8 cafeteria/bar voucher when tickets are used at Sierra-at-Tahoe.

Squaw Valley – $53 discount tickets. The regular price will be $69 and $73 during holidays.

Sugar Bowl – $42 discount tickets. The regular weekend price will be $50 and $63 during holidays.

FWSA is offering an exciting European Winter Trip for 2007

Bormio, Italy
March 3rd-11th
Our Bormio package remains as advertised. For more information CLICK HERE
The Posta Hotel is full, but we still have space in the other three units and I'm assured they are excellent hotels.

And for those who can take the time, a pre and post trip extensions.

We have an exciting pre-trip to Interlaken, Switzerland
It is truly a wonderful place for skiers and non-skiers alike.
Our pre-trip will start on Feb.27th flying to Zurich and on to Interlaken for 4 nights.
Interlaken was named by monks in 1130 because it is sandwiched between two lakes:
the Brienzersee and the Thunersee which are lined by a large collection of castles, shops, and restaurants.
It is nestled below the Jungfrau region, which is considered the birthplace of skiing. We got all this for a very reasonable price.

Post Bormio trip is visiting Verona, Florence, a wine tasting in Tuscany, Siena and finally Rome (by motor coach)
We start in Verona on March 11th and will return home from Rome on March 18th.

We expect to have travel details out to all who have sent us deposits in two weeks. This package will contain payment schedules, a formal application and waiver, request for a copy of your passport, confirmation of Bormio hotel accommodations, optional tour availability and all the details we can accumulate on the three trips at this time. When we get closer to departure or as it becomes available,
we will provide you with more complete travel information, e.g. airline schedules, lift ticket arrangements, etc.

Pre and post trip participation is limited by our ability to firm up airline arrangements.
We will fill airline seats based on the date we receive your deposit.

To be included in the pre or post extensions, you must send FWSA an additional $100 for each of the pre and post trip (s) you choose.

I believe we can get plenty of space for those who want to join us on the extensions at this time,
but to do so we need to confirm airline seats within a couple of weeks. Send your deposits now to assure your place.
