Says I’ve been asked this question from many sources: “When is it going to snow?” Well, I’m not a soothsayer, but I can guarantee that the day is coming (much to the delight of the active snow-buffs). I was watching the late-night news one Saturday night, and the TV screen showed a reporter from Channel 3 standing along-side I-80 at Blue Canyon, with snow coming down and chains being required by CalTrans. I took that as an indication that winter is approaching, but that snowfall was short-lived and was a teasing prediction of things to come in the near future. Of course, CalTrans is noted for their overreacting to a little fluff on the pavement. I regret to announce that Sandy Lange has resigned from her Executive Board position as Social Chairperson. She has accepted employment with a company affiliated with FEMA and is currently working in the New Orleans area helping get things settled after the devastating hurricanes. She will be gone from our area for an extended period of time. My personal thanks goes out to Sandy, for the time and efforts she did put in while she was on the Board. She will be missed. Stay safe, stay healthy, and pray to the Snow Gods to start our winter season early by looking down on us with kindness, and blessing us with a long season of fun-filled days of snow-related sports. I
bring a photo album to each and every FaGowee function with the
photos of our past events, and I depend on you, the general
membership, to supply those photos for the albums. If you have any
pic’s of any FaGowee’s having fun, please get them to me so I can
add them to our archives. For the sake of ease in creating and
displaying the photo pages, I’d prefer the prints to be 4”x 6” in
size. If you have any questions of photos you’d like to part with,
please contact me at 916-817-4277. |

FaGowee Race Information The FaGowees race in the Sierra League, which is comprised of several ski clubs in Northern California and the Reno area. Racer levels range from low intermediate to expert. There are 10 ability levels with two age groups in each level. You race against skiers that have the age and ability as you do! Everyone is there to have fun and to improve their skiing while having a friendly competition. There are GS, slalom and one giant slalom races each season for a total of 8 races plus the NorCal and Far West finals. Races are $20 each or you can buy a race pass for about $75 (FaGowees subsidize your race pass by $25, making your membership almost free! And you also get a wonderful gift if you race 3 times in a season.) You (and your friends that show up in the morning to register for the races) get discounted lift tickets on race day! Scared to race? Don’t despair! The first race is free and there are several race clinics, including those before the first races, which are sponsored by the Sierra League. Discount Tickets Each fall the Sacramento FaGowee Ski Club offers club members the opportunity to purchases lift tickets for North Tahoe ski resort at a discount (usually about $10 off the regular price). The best part is that unused tickets may be turned in at the end of the season by the posted deadline for a credit towards the next season. Those of you who ordered tickets last season should have already received an order form for 2005/2006 tickets. If you turned in tickets for a credit last Spring, then the credit will show up on your order form. For those that did not get an order form in the mail, you can get and order form from the discount tickets web site, at FaGowee meetings and selected social events, or you can contact me and I will send one to you. The deadline for Alpine Meadow, Squaw Valley, and Sugar Bowl pre-orders has passed, but there are still tickets available for these areas on a first come first serve basis. Pre-orders for Northstar and Homewood are still being taken until November 20, 2005. Here are the latest prices and info: Alpine Meadows –The regular price is going up $2 to $41 ($49 during holidays). No detail on the discount price, but last year’s discount price was the same as the regular price with black-out dates during holidays. Homewood – No information at this time. Last year’s discount price: $34, a discount of $10 from the weekend price. Northstar-at-Tahoe/Sierra-at-Tahoe – The discount price went up to $51. Expect the regular price to be $61. Squaw Valley – The discount price has gone up two dollars to $53. Expect the regular price to be at least $62. Sugar Bowl – The discount price: $37 ($8 less than last year!). No information about regular prices, but this is certainly a great deal. Please note that the order forms sent out last month still had last year’s discount price of $45 for Sugar Bowl. If you ordered tickets at this price, your account will be adjusted accordingly and a refund check will be provided with your order. GOLDPOINT Thursday night we ate at Carson Peak Inn on the June Lake Loop. Not good. Next year back to Mono Inn. Friday morning after breakfast at Nicely's we headed towards Goldpoint, stopping at Schat's to load up for two days worth of lunches. Some of the members headed directly towards Goldpoint over Westgard Pass, a paved road. I headed into the north end of Death Valley with Tom and Adrian following. The road I intended to take, up Eureka Canyon was closed so we headed on down toward Ubehube Crater to pick up the Tule Canyon road which would take us directly to Gold point. We were on dirt by this time. Well graded but washboards. We came to the Tule Canyon cut off where we took some pictures along a sign that signified the road led to Goldpoint and amongst broken car parts from cars that never made it further. Part of the problem is that I set up the GPS from USGS Topo maps that were made in 1953, the most current ones. By now, some of the roads no longer exist and there are some new ones. So the GPS does not always show all the roads and there are some roads not shown on the GPS, so we have to feel our way in many circumstances. Heading up the Tule Canyon road I elected to go left at a fork, on a road that was not graded as well as the one we were on. Mighty rough as a matter of fact. About a mile up we decided it was the wrong road and turned around to go back. No trouble for Tom who had a four-wheel drive station wagon, but my Ford was wider. I got careless, over confident and got stuck. No excuses. The car was 90 degrees to the road with the rear wheels dug into the sand/dirt berm and the front bumper against an upturned rock. Tom and I had a discussion on what to do. After a few moments we heard a lot of clawing and I walked around to the front of the car to find Adrian digging the rock out with her hands. I started to help but she growled at me, "Beat it buster, this is my work". Well, she finally got the big rock out but the rear wheels were still dug in and the car wouldn't move. After more discussion, we decided we would have to dig the rear wheels out, which Adrian had already began. We decided that Tom would have to pull me out of the ruts with his four-wheel drive. I dug to install the trailer hitch to tie the rope to while Adrian directed Tom where to align their station wagon. Tom pulled the Ford out; I jumped in the car, and was back on the road heading back to the fork with Tom and Adrian behind me. We proceeded on the graded road that seemed to be the main road. After a while, I gained confidence as the road began to look like what I imagined a road named Tule Canyon should look like. Confidence was further enhanced when we passed Roosevelt Wells, which consisted of an old rusty windmill and a corral of which I knew of. We finally roared into Goldpoint scattering a flurry of Grouses who were milling around in the middle of the road, to see the rest of the Fagowees sitting on the porch of the bar relaxing. It was about 4 o'clock...They got there at noon. But we had more fun. Sherriff Stone asked if we would mind eating in the big house (Sherriff Stone and Red Dog Lil's abode there) because there were so few of us (6) it would be inconvenient to serve us in the bar where we usually eat. We all sat at a big table in the big house for what seemed like a big family thanksgiving dinner. Saturday morning we had breakfast and headed out towards the Petroglyphs. We came to where the Petroglyphs could be walked to. According to the USGS the Petroglyphs were about 100 yards off the road and up on top of a hill. But of course 100 yards on the map was horizontal distance and when everyone saw the steepness of the hill they said the heck with it, "I'm not climbing up there for nothing". We stood around for a while and I pointed out the Empress Mine while Adrian gathered Hazel Nuts. According to the GPS there was a mine at the end of the road. We headed up the road. After turning left at a "T" intersection we wound up on top of a hill where there was a great view of Death Valley. We proceeded on until the road just ran out, still on top of the hill. We turned around and went back. We then spent some time trying to figure out where we were exactly so we would be better prepared for next year. We went back to Goldpoint where Sherriff Stone informed me that there was a road to the Petroglyphs and it was the road on top of the hill where the road ran out. We were about 10 feet from them and didn't know it. That night we were served more food in the big house and afterwards some played pool in the bar. Next morning, more food at breakfast and then we all went home. |
