The FaGowee International, Sacramento Chapter

May 2006

By:  Jim Van Riper

OCCASION: Cinco de Mayo Potluck Party & BBQ
DATE / TIME: Friday, May 5, 2006 at 6:30 pm
CONTACT: Diane Wilson’s hacienda ~ 361-3140

Diane Wilson has graciously offered to open her home to all FaGowee’s and their guests so we can do what we usually do best…

Can you say (or “grupo fiesta”)

We know that the FaGowee’s have never really needed a reason to party, but occasionally it helps.  And celebrating Cinco de Mayo is a great reason to have a no-host Pot-luck Party and BBQ.  Diane also has a pool that will be available for those who wish to brave the still-cold elements of spring and jump in.  But please be advised that there will not be a sober lifeguard on duty (or anyone else in their right mind for that matter) to save you from your lack of judgment
if you do decide to be foolish enough to do that
.

YOU BRING: BYOB
                     Your own meat to BBQ
Your favorite Mexican hot side-dish to share

CLUB SUPPLIES: Chips and salsa
                             Plates, tableware and napkins
A hot BBQ for you to cook your own main dish

This will definitely be a time of fun and laughter, so don’t be left out.
We hope to see you all there.

Prez Says
Rain, Rain, Go Away…
Is anybody else out there tired of all the rain and flooding that we’ve been inundated with over the past two months? As I write this article, we are having a temporary break in the weather. The sun is brightly shining, there isn’t a cloud in the sky and the ski conditions in the Tahoe area are just what the Snow Gods have ordered for all you ski enthusiasts. However, I have noticed that those gods do seem to have a warped since of humor. They bring on the great ski days during the middle of the week, and then bring in the inclement weather to add to the snow pack, traffic and chain controls on the weekends. Great for the retired, but really sucks for those who have to work during the week and only get the chance to enjoy the slopes on the weekends. Moral of that story… Call in sick or Retire!!! If you opt for the latter, just remember –
“Retirement ain’t for sissies!”

Congratulations…
I’ve been informed that one of our long-time club members has recently become engaged. When you get the chance, be sure to congratulate Danielle Woods for her upcoming October nuptials to David Sliper. Dave has attended many FaGowee events and is a great guy, and I wish them both the very best for a long and happy life together.

Upcoming Elections…
My personal thanks go out to Marilyn Miller, Bob McDonald and Diane Wilson for serving on the nominations committee for the upcoming Executive Board elections. The elections will be held at the General Meeting on Tuesday, May 23rd at the home of Norm & Karen Benedict. They will be providing a spaghetti dinner with all the trimmings that evening, so be sure to attend, vote, and eat them out of house and home for that “freebie” meal.

Upcoming parties & Social events…
Be sure to mark your calendars and plan to attend the following events. You won’t be disappointed.

  • Cinco de Mayo party at Diane Wilson’s home on Friday, May 5th at 6:30pm.
  • 3rd Annual FaGowee Family Picnic & End of the World Party on Sunday, July 9th.
  • Eppie's Great Race on Saturday, July 15th and the Pool party at Diane Wilson's home after the race.

    SPRING PICTURES WANTED!!!
    By: Bob McDonald

Celebrate Spring with pictures! Then I can include them in our photo albums. The photo album is brought to each and every FaGowee function with the photos of our past events, and I depend on you, the general membership, to supply those photos for the albums. If you have any pics of any FaGowee’s having fun, please get them to me so I can add them to our archives.  For the sake of ease in creating and displaying the photo pages, I’d prefer the prints to be 4”x 6” in size. If you have any questions of photos you’d like to part with, please contact me at 916-817-4277.

It’s volunteer time again.  Mark your calendars and plan to join us as the FaGowee’s volunteer again to help serve the Sacramento County Adaptive Leisure Services by working at the finish line at Eppie’s Great Race, the world’s oldest triathlon. This event is 33 years old this year.  Many of our faithful club members have served in this capacity for over 10 years and we have always had a great time.

FaGowee members “man” (or to be politically correct – “person”) the finish line.  We greet and congratulate the athletes as they arrive at the finish line, remove their bib numbers, staple their tags and record the overall times of the individual contestants or teams.

For our efforts, we receive a T-shirt (SM to XXL), free drink and free food coupons and a free parking permit.  We also receive an abundance of “Thank You’s” from many of the contestants and from the officials.  After the race, we will meet at Diane Wilson’s home for a BBQ and Pool Party.

Last year, our own then-President Eric Schmitt competed in the kayaking portion of this event, and he did quite well.  If you were interested, Eric would like to get a FaGowee team together to compete this year.  He will again participate in the kayak portion of the race, but he needs someone who’s willing to run and another to bike those portions of this event.  Contact Eric Schmitt at 916-782-3158 if you are interested in putting together an official FaGowee Eppie’s Great Race Team.

    Welcome New Member!!!

We would like to welcome Marilyn Peterson to the Sacramento FaGowees!
We hope to see her at all the meetings and gatherings!

NOSTALGIA RIVER CRUISE TO SAN FRANCISCO RECAP
    By: Jim Van Riper

April 9, 2006 will go down in FaGowee history as one of the most enjoyable days on the river that we’ve ever had.  Before we even boarded the ship, I could see a FaCademy Award in the making – for one of our group that forgot his (or her) photo ID – which was required to be able to board the ship.  A little fast-talking finally got that club member (and you know who you are) on board without too much of a problem.

The day was overcast and the weather forecast predicted rain, but true to FaGowee custom, we weren’t going to let a little inclement weather spoil our fun.  12 FaGowee’s and their 5 guests joined approximately 250 other “wanna-be sailors” aboard the WWII liberty ship, SS Jeremiah O’Brien as she steamed through the inland Sacramento Delta waterways from the Port of Sacramento to San Francisco.

Upon boarding, we were treated to a continental breakfast on the main deck.  Norm Benedict expressed one concern, stating that he saw the crew bringing 2 of every kind of animal on board before we departed the port.  After we gathered our personal belongings and found a place to set up our “ base camp” near the port bow, we began exploring the ship from stem to stern.  We found that if the weather became too chilled for our liking, we could always wander down into the boiler and engine rooms where the temps were over 100°.

This ship is restored to its original WWII configuration as originally built, so it was quite an eye opener as to what we saw.  The museum and photos in Hold # 2 were quite interesting.  They explained the need for, the building of and the mission of the liberty ships.  The displays were really worth taking the time to view.  The gift shop had a large variety of items of interest relating to the ship, and many a dollar was spent in there.

While underway, were treated to one of the all-volunteer crewmen “playing” with a 20 caliber anti-aircraft machine gun, blasting away at people fishing along the banks of the river, approaching wave runners and other pleasure craft.  The on-deck bar was open with free wine and beer, bottled water and soft drinks and the live band played 40’s big band era music while several guests danced the day away.

One of the most interesting sights we beheld was the “mothball fleet” at anchor in Suisan Bay.  We had a great view of the battleship USS Iowa as well as almost 90 other ships of various sizes.  Many of the vessels that had been stored there in the past have been used for naval gunnery practice, some had been purposely sunk to build barrier reefs, and even the ship we were on was at one time a part of that mothball fleet.  There are plans to restore the Iowa and place her on display as a museum.  As we passed areas of interest, the captain would come over the loudspeaker to point them out and explain their historical importance.

Our delicious catered lunch consisted of all-you-can-eat BBQ teriyaki chicken, BBQ pork, Caesar salad, fruit salad, wild rice, garlic bread and cookies for dessert.

The weather and the water stayed calm for several hours, but as we approached the San Francisco Bay, the wind coming off the ocean began kicking up.  However, the rain gods continued to smile upon us as the rain still remained in a holding pattern and the ship remained steady and smooth in the water.

Later in the afternoon, we were treated to an additional unexpected dining treat of spring rolls, BBQ baby hot links, a large variety of snack crackers with a couple kinds of dip, and M&M chocolate candies.

We got a wonderful view of the former residence of Al Capone as we passed Alcatraz Island, and a spectacular view of the San Francisco skyline as we crossed the bay and approached our final docking facility at Fisherman’s Wharf.  As we tied to the dock and let down the gangway, the weather gods decided to play a little prank on us and it rained for about 2 minutes – just enough to let us know what they had been capable of had they opted to try to dampen our spirits.  Immediately after leaving the ship, we boarded our chartered bus for the ride back home to Sacramento.  Overall, the 12-hour day was relaxing, entertaining, educational, and a lot of fun.  I definitely will plan to lead the FaGowee’s on a trip like this again the next time the SS Jeremiah O’Brien comes to town.  It will be a day that you should plan to join us, and a day that you will never forget.

    Jan 27 - Feb 3, 2007

Located in the Colorado Rockies, Steamboat Ski Resort is one of North America's largest ski mountains. With 143 trails, 3,600 vertical feet, and nearly 3,000 skiable acres, Steamboat provides a variety of terrain for every level of skier. Steamboat is a complete mountain range with Mt. Werner, Sunshine Peak, Storm Peak, Thunderhead Peak, Christie Peak and Pioneer Ridge. Steamboats six peaks are filled with groomed cruisers, bumps, steep, open meadows and legendary tree skiing. The phrase "champagne powder snow" was coined at Steamboat.
