The FaGowee International, Sacramento Chapter

March 2006

'TIS NIGH TIME FOR THE WEARING O’ THE GREEN!
SO, THERE’S A ST. PATTY’S PARTY AT KATI’S

Put on your best green garb and join the rest of us Irish lads and lassies for a traditional St. Patrick’s Day Dinner on
Saturday, March 11th
…commencing ‘bout 6 pm and stoppin’ when the eatin’s done and the movie’s over.
(Sorry but it’s the only day I have off to do this and you can celebrate it again on the 17th!)

“Lord of the Dance” with Michael Flatly and the Irish ensemble will be on while we dine. Dinner will be:

Corned Beef, Cabbage, Potatoes, and Carrots (all stewing in the big pot)
Cheesy Cornbread with Honeybutter
Chocolate Chip Mint Ice Cream with Chocolate Cake for dessert
Decaf coffee (to wash it all down) if you want something else to drink, you’ll have to bring your own.

After Dinner, we can settle back to watch
John Wayne & Maureen O’Hara in “The Quiet Man”…a real classic
and/or possibly another well-known Irish classic.

There is an $8.00 charge for this evening of gastronomical delights and your check will be your reservation.
My co-hosts will welcome and check you in at the door.
Since I must purchase and prepare this food in advance, I need to know how many to prepare for…therefore, please send your check made payable to:
Kati White
9449 Appalachian Drive
Sacramento, CA. 95827-1136
to reserve your place at the table.
Space is limited so you’d best be hoppin’ to it!

We will be joined by the members of eLifeConnection, so you will have the opportunity to make some new friends and share the evening. Proceeds after expenses will be donated back to the appropriate organization.
If you have questions or get lost, just call Kati’s house at 363-9000 and some one will hopefully help you.

Snowshoe trip to Echo Lake

Break out your snowshoes because the FaGowee’s are planning a snowshoe hike in the Echo Lake area.

This location has breathless views of Lake Tahoe and is an easy hike for newbie’s and seasoned shoers alike.

We will meet on Wednesday, March 22 (rain date 29)
at the Bradshaw’s Restaurant in Rancho Cordova on the northwest corner at the intersection of Sunrise and Folsom Blvds.
We will leave at
8:30 am. If you will be having breakfast first be there at 7:45.
We should get to the sno-park by 10:30 and return around 2:00.
We can stop at the Strawberry Lodge for a late lunch if the mood, hunger and thirst strike us.

Sign up with Karen Fontaine @ 916-985-8523 no later than March 18th
After that time you are on your own to get there.

We will be carpooling so if you are willing to drive let Karen know and you might want to pickup your sno-park permit before hand.
Go to www.ohv.parks.ca.gov for sales locations.
If you are a AAA member you might check with them.
Mail requests are not a good idea because they are only good for the date specified and
because of weather concerns it would be hard to know the weather 5 days in advance.
I plan to get mine the day before. If you are going to get them en-route, phone ahead to make sure they have one-day permits.

If you are riding with someone be sure to share the costs.

You may rent snowshoes at REI for a reasonable amount.

This is a fun exercise and a better way to see the beauty of the mountains

Prez Says
The Sacramento FaGowee Ski Club offers parties, potlucks, a wide variety of social functions and several trips throughout the year for the benefit of its members and guests.
With that in mind, I have two simple questions that I’d like to put to each and every member of this club. I personally don’t know your individual answers, but I’m sure there are many and they’re varied. These are questions that I’ve already put to the members of your Executive Board, and for the life of us, we cannot as individuals or as a group come up with an educated answer to either of them. Maybe a few of the members would like to come forward and enlighten the Board and myself.
This club currently has over 100 members. Of those members, I see on the average less than 30 show up at the majority of the social events or trips, and less than 20 at the regularly scheduled monthly social meetings. I’ve been a member of this club for over eight years now, and I’ve been a member of the Executive Board serving in one position or another for the past six years. It truly amazes me that there are some members that have been on our club’s roster for those eight years that I’ve never met or even seen at any FaGowee function.
I’m confused and dumbfounded at the prospect of why someone would want to join an organization, pay their yearly membership fees, and then never show up at a meeting or never take advantage of anything that the organization they joined has to offer them. Can somebody please explain this to me? Am I missing something here?

My two questions to the club membership are as follows:

1. What would you like to see this club do for you that it doesn’t already offer that could possibly peak your interest to become involved?

2. In what future direction would you personally like to see this club go? And why? (I know – that’s a third question…sorry about that..)

The Executive Board would love to hear some constructive feedback from the general membership in this area. Go ahead… Let us have it… I DARE YOU!!!
And now, on a positive note, the weather gods have graciously provided you all with an abundance of snow at all your favorite resorts. So after making your feedback phone call (or e-mail) to the Board
member of your choice, go out and hit those slopes. Stay safe, stay dry and stay healthy.

And finally…

****THE SKI SEASON IS HERE!!!!****
By: Bob McDonald

Celebrate the new ski season with pictures! Then I can include them in our photo albums. I bring a photo album to each and every FaGowee function with the photos of our past events, and I depend on you, the general membership, to supply those photos for the albums. If you have any pics of any FaGowee’s having fun, please get them to me so I can add them to our archives. For the sake of ease in creating and displaying the photo pages, I’d prefer the prints to be 4”x 6” in size.
If you have any questions of photos you’d like to part with, please contact me at 916-817-4277.

***Press Release***
Event Recaps

A bunch of senior citizens were reported running around like wild Indians in San Francisco.

January 31, 2006 - Fourteen FaGowees met at Eppie’s in West Sacramento for breakfast before our mid-week trip to San Francisco to visit the De Young museum and the Hatshepsut: “From Queen To Pharaoh” exhibit.
Carpooling is the only way to travel in the bay area as the 4 carloads of us, doing the speed limit, whizzed by stalled traffic while saving some very valuable time in which to complete our agenda. Each car had a map to the museum which did no good when we got to the park because of construction causing closed streets, missing signs, closed lanes. In spite of this three of the cars, each taking a different route thru the park, ended up at the exact spot within one minute of each other. Can you say blind luck?
The price for the exhibit was well worth it but it also got us into the rest of this fabulous building which is an architectural wonder. We only had 3 hours to spend there and easily could have spent 3 more. I urge everyone
when they are near the Golden Gate Park to drop by.
Getting out of the park was just as trying for some of us, our car took an unplanned scenic route thru some neighborhoods that I never want to visit again, but thanks to our navigator, without a map, got us down to Fishermen’s Wharf/ Pier 39 area for a great lunch at dockside. After lunch we all toured Pier 39 and Fisherman’s Wharf for a couple of hours in sunny 68 degree weather, meeting up again at 6 for dinner overlooking the harbor. After stuffing ourselves on crab and chowder, it was time to leave. We took a route over the Golden Gate Bridge to the bay overlook, which gave us a fantastic view of the city on a clear night.
Many thanks to Linda & Jerry, Diane C. & Diane W, Margaret and Jim, Chizuko& Jerry, Jackie & Barbara, Bob, Ann & Greg and Karen and one guest for making this a fun day in “The City By The Bay”.

Major gambling ring busted in Sacramento

February 5, 2006 - Sunday was Superbowl Sunday and a time and an excuse for the FaGowee’s to get together for food, adult beverages and fun. This event was also a chili cook-off which resulted with a tie for best chili between Chef (never met a habanera he didn’t like) Wally and Fred (mo peppers mo better)

Carlson and a close second place to Karen Fontaine for her famous flame-thrower chili. Along with the chili’s were hot dogs and hamburgers, and more desserts than you could eat. I know…I tried.
Did I mention there was football being played between commercials? Well those of us who took part in Jim’s football pool kept close watch
on the score because there were big bucks on the line every quarter.
There was a good turnout on this warm winter day and many thanks to Diane Wilson for opening up her home to us all. We did need another TV out on the patio though.
Norman

Love was in the air in Folsom

February 14, 2006 - Valentines day was another excuse for a party and a party it was. Karen Fontaine hosted this party, which featured a spaghetti dinner and an array of snacks, and desserts that would make anyone fall in love. Jim was there with 24-hour marriage certificates just in case things did get out of control. There was a trivia quiz to see who knew the most about love and who would have guessed that Jim Van Riper, the bachelor, would win. This just proves what a great    catch he is.
There also was a dessert contest that was won by Bob McDonald another single man, (you girls better pay attention) who whipped up some kind of an ambrosia thing that was out of this world. Our judges Rob and Meredith had a tough time picking a winner because there were some fantastic cookies by Shirley & Eric and Linda & Jerry, a banana cream pie by Ted and Raley’s, cherry pie by Jim, hand dipped strawberries by Margaret and Diane, chocolate cake from Dick P. and so, so much more.  If that wasn’t
enough we had snacks galore, Marilyn brought her famous deviled eggs, Lee brought enough chilled shrimp for everybody and others packed the table so nobody went home hungry.
It was good to see Fred and everyone’s favorite valentine Sandy Lange who was in town for a short visit. Thanks to Norman who whipped up enough spaghetti for 40 people.

AN ADVANCED WARNING:

Please be forewarned in advance that this is NOT a modern luxury cruise liner.
It is a restored WWII Liberty Ship.  This ship has NO facilities for the physically handicapped,
and climbing from one deck to another involves the use of steep stairwells and/or ladders.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SHIP:

Jeremiah O’Brien was born in Ireland and immigrated to Maine.  He fought on the side of the United States, capturing several British warships and using them against the British naval forces during the Revolutionary War.  After being captured by the British, he was transported as a prisoner of war to England, where he promptly escaped (or just walked out unopposed) from his prison camp.  He escaped to Australia and immediately returned to the United States to continue his fight against the British navy, thus becoming the first ever U.S. Naval war hero.  The Liberty Ship SS Jeremiah O’Brien was named after him.

Before WWII, shipbuilding in the U.S. was not a major industry.  But with the German U-Boats sinking ships off the east coast within sight of land, England on her knees, and the Japanese conquering Asia and the Western Pacific, it was essential to build a large, strong US Merchant Marine to carry combat supplies and materials to the Allied fighting forces.  Eighteen shipyards built Liberty Ships, and one-third of the building workforce was women.  Without these ships, the Allies simply could not have won the war.

The WWII Liberty Ship SS Jeremiah O’Brien was built in 56 days in Portland, Maine and was launched on June 19, 1943.  She is a 441-foot cargo ship veteran of the Normandy invasion.  She is fully restored and maintained in her original condition, and is operated by an all-volunteer crew.  She is as functional today as when she served as a key component of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Bridge of Ships’ during WWII.  The SS Jeremiah O’Brien is a mobile museum and is the only vessel present at the invasion of Normandy in 1944 to return fifty years later for the 50th anniversary of D-Day in 1994.  The ship is registered as a National Historic Landmark, and her triple expansion reciprocating steam engine is registered as a National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark.

Of the 2710 Liberty Ships originally build during WWII, only the SS Jeremiah O’Brien (located in San Francisco) and the SS John Brown (located in Maryland) still exist in their original as-built condition and configuration today.

Your President is going on a 5-day camping trip to Yosemite National Park. This trip is NOT an official FaGowee function, but any and all FaGowee’s and their guests are invited to join those of us who are planning on going. If you want to go, however, you must make your own lodging reservations, and you will be responsible for your own meals, lodging expenses and Park entrance fees. (The entrance fee to Yosemite is good for 7 days from the time you purchase it, so you’ll only have a one-time fee for park entry.) Please note that the club will not be accepting any monies or making any reservations for anybody who wants to go.
By going at this time of year, there will be many spectacular views of the waterfalls as well as lots of great hiking, photo ops and wildlife viewing opportunities. We are going mid-week before the schools let out for the summer, so there should be no real problem with crowds or traffic.
The campground is located next to the Cedar Lodge (information & reservation # 888-742-4371) on Highway 140. The lodge’s restaurant and pool facilities are available to the campground guests. Cedar Lodge has both an indoor and an outdoor pool for the guests’ convenience, and there are no pool-usage fees to lodge or campground guests.
Those who go on this trip will have a lifetime of memories of the fun and frolic with friends amongst the giant redwoods. I hope to see you there.

Race Corner
Andrea Woelfle

March is a fabulous month for skiing… lots of sun and fun and a busy month for racers. In fact, half of the race year’s races are happening this month during the weekends of March 4 and March 11. Check the race schedule for details. If you’d like to try racing, don’t forget first time racers are free! These races go really fast now, so you can’t use the excuse, “I just don’t want to stand around and wait, I just want to ski.” No longer true!! If you finish 3 races, you can race at the finals, which are really fun, especially the cute free T-shirts. Even if you don’t race with us, join us at registration (7:30 to 8:30 a.m.) for discounted lift tickets. Tickets at Northstar, for instance, are only $41.
