Come and join your brother & sister FaGowee’s at our 3rd Annual FaGowee Family Picnic.  This year’s outing is being combined with our Annual Luau.  The Luau has traditionally been a fundraiser to help support your race team, and this year is no exception.  Rancho Seco Recreational Area is located adjacent to SMUD’s former nuclear power plant.  There is a 160-acre fresh-water lake, large lawn areas and a large clean sandy beach.  R/V and tent camping sites are available for those who might want to come earlier or stay longer.

THE CLUB WILL PROVIDE:  BBQ pork ribs and hot dogs, the sandwich buns and condiments, potato salad, macaroni salad, baked beans, a sheet cake, a variety of soft drinks & bottled water, the plates, cups & eating utensils.

ADDITIONAL THINGS TO DO: Rancho Seco Recreational Area offers everybody a wide variety of things to do for their enjoyment.

  1. Cast a line from one of the six fishing piers.  The lake sports bass, bluegill, red-ear sunfish, crappie and catfish. SMUD also stocks the lake with rainbow trout, November through March.  (Fishing enthusiasts 16 years and older must possess a valid California fishing license to fish).
  2. There are two boat-launching ramps.  Bring your own kayak, canoe, rowboat, sailboat or electric motor boat.  (Gas-powered boats are not allowed on the lake.)
  3. Pedal-boat and kayak rental is available from May through September.
  4. Depending on the wind conditions, windsurfing is allowed.
  5. There is a roped-off swimming area along the 36,000-square-foot sandy beach.  Lifeguards are on duty.
  6. There is a General Store available May through September for your incidental shopping needs.

  8. 20 Tent lakeside campsites are available.  Each site has a BBQ, picnic table and drinking water.  There is a $10 per night charge for Tent sites and reservations are required.  Call 916-732-4913 to make your tent camping reservations.
  9. Also available for your convenience:  Coin operated showers, washer & dryers, fish cleaning stations, 3 public restrooms, horseshoe pits and a recreation room are available for overnight campers.

DIRECTIONS:  From Sacramento, take Highway 99 south to the Twin Cities Road/Highway 104 exit.  Go east for 15 miles on Highway 104 to the Rancho Seco Park exit.  Take the first right after passing the two towers to the park entrance.   We’re looking forward to seeing you there.  “AFFAFFA

EPPIE’S GREAT RACE
IS COMING!!!
Date:  Saturday, July 15, 2006 – 8 am to 11 am
Location:
 Goethe Park

Leave a message with your T-shirt size.

It’s volunteer time again.  Mark your calendars and plan to join us as the FaGowee’s volunteer again to help serve the Sacramento County Adaptive Leisure Services by working at the finish line at Eppie’s Great Race, the world’s oldest triathlon. This event is 33 years old this year.  Many of our faithful club members have served in this capacity for over 10 years and we have always had a great time.

FaGowee members “man” (or to be politically correct – “person”) the finish line.  We greet and congratulate the athletes as they arrive at the finish line, remove their bib numbers, staple their tags and record the overall times of the individual contestants or teams.

For our efforts, we receive a T-shirt (SM to XXL), free drink and free food coupons and a free parking permit.  We also receive an abundance of “Thank You’s” from many of the contestants and from the officials.  After the race, we will meet at Diane Wilson’s home for a BBQ and Pool Party.

Last year, our own then-President Eric Schmitt competed in the kayaking portion of this event, and he did quite well.  If you were interested, Eric would like to get a FaGowee team together to compete this year.  He will again participate in the kayak portion of the race, but he needs someone who’s willing to run and another to bike those portions of this event.  Contact Eric Schmitt at 916-782-3158 if you are interested in putting together an official FaGowee Eppie’s Great Race Team.

Prez Says

The 2005 / 2006 ski season is over now since summer officially arrived on June 21st, and has pounded us with temps around the century mark. It’s time to re-think our priorities until the snow gods return to the Northern Hemisphere. My suggestion is to think of things related to Summer Fun: Camping, BBQ’s, and Swimming. Your club is offering several events for your enjoyment in July and August. Here is a brief recap of what we are offering. More detailed articles are elsewhere in this newsletter.
The Annual FaGowee Family Picnic is being held on Saturday, July 8th. This day of frolic and comrade topped with a BBQ will be held at Rancho Seco Regional Park. Bring your friends, family, grandkids, appetites, your canoes, kayaks or just cool off with a quick swim in the cool water of the lake. This event is a fundraiser for your Race Team, so be sure to come and support them by gracing us with your attendance.
Jackie Chesi is our lady of the month as she takes on the challenge of gathering many of the FaGowee’s together to volunteer to help at the finish line of Eppie’s Great Race on July 15th. We’ve done this every year since I’ve been a member of the club, and it’s always provided to those in attendance with a lot of laughter, joy and satisfaction knowing that we were able to help Eppie Johnson provide donations to the Sacramento County Therapeutic Recreational Services through this event. This program provides the opportunity for those with mental, physical, developmental, sensory and emotional impairments to become involved in an individual or group setting to become involved in social clubs, camps, classes, special events, sports & fitness programs, travel and vocational training programs. It is only a couple hours out of your day to be there with us, so be sure to contact Jackie to let her know of your interest. After the race is over, we will all be migrating to Diane Wilson’s home for an afternoon potluck BBQ and a swim party.
July 25th is the date of the July General Membership Meeting to be held at the home of Kati White. There is a pool available and we are planning another potluck BBQ. Bring your own meat to BBQ and a potluck dish to share. A lot of useful information regarding our upcoming events will be discussed, so be sure not to miss this meeting.
The Annual Abalone Dive & Dine camping trip to Mendocino is scheduled to be held at the Caspar Beach R/V Park & Campground from August 17th to the 20th. This is always one of the most successful and most attended of the events we offer every year. Everybody has always had a great time on this trip, and this year shows the signs of being as much if not more fun than in former years. This is your one chance this year to get an all-you-can-eat abalone dinner for a mere pittance of what you’d normally pay if you were to go to a restaurant for an abalone dinner. An average abalone entrée at a restaurant (if you can find it) is $75 to $95 per pound. Be sure to join us for this not-to-be-missed camping trip.
     Don Girard
is planning and hosting the Annual Gold Point Ghost Town trip again this year. The dates are set for Oct 6th to the 8th. Don has always made this trip a lot of fun and quite educational as he always plans and leads us on several interesting side trips. Be sure to join us to see just what surprises he has in store again for us this year.

My Personal ThanksI want to personally thank the new Executive Board members for taking on the responsibilities of running this club. As previously noted in last month’s newsletter, the elections resulted in Richard Persons becoming our V.P., Cynthia Barlow became our Secretary, and Norman Benedict retained his position as our Treasurer again this year. My thanks to the appointees to the Board, Lee Johnson for accepting the appointed position as our Race Chair and as our International Representative to the FaGowee’s this year, to Tracee Carter for accepting her appointment as the Newsletter and Webmaster again this year, and to Bob McDonald for accepting the position of Historian again this year. I especially want to thank to Lauri Thompson and Karen Benedict for volunteering at the very last minute to serve on the Board as the Activities Chair and Membership Chair respectively. Without their volunteering, those two extremely important offices would have been unfilled. Your Executive Board is here for you, and we’re all looking forward to serving you in the best interest of the club.

Pictures Wanted!!!
Bob McDonald

Summer has arrived and so has the opportunity for pictures! Take pictures of any FaGowee’s having fun so I can include them in our photo albums. The albums are brought to each and every FaGowee function with the photos of our past events, and I depend on you, the general membership, to supply those photos for the albums. So...get those pictures taken so I can add them to our archives. For the sake of ease in creating and displaying the
photo pages, I’d prefer the prints to be 4”x 6” in size. If you have any questions, or photos you’d like to part with, please contact me at 817-4277.

Gold Point ~ Don Girard
The queue is rapidly forming for Gold Point the weekend of Oct 6th, 7th & 8th. The cost will be $150.00 per person plus or minus.

We are going back to caravanning between Lee Vining and Gold Point again this year. It didn't work out very well last year. I got stuck and everyone beat me to Gold Point. This year you can all follow me so we can all get stuck.

I have found a new and circuitous route. We turn left at Wingard Pass, then right at the radio telescope array, then left at Gearbox Junction and on to Roosevelt Wells where we will lunch, if I can find it. I understand it is a lovely oasis. Then over the hill to Gold Point. I advise 22PSI air pressure in your tires and be sure and adjust your shocks before you leave, There will be plenty of washboards to rattle your teeth.

Thursday night dinner will be back at Mono Inn. Eight O'clock. They have raised their prices a lot so it should be very enjoyable. Dinner last year at the Carson Peak Inn was a disaster. That’s what happens when you go cheap!

In Loving Memory of:

Vern Zwahlen
July 19, 1943-May 22, 2006

The poem was provided by Marilyn Miller. It was read at the service and dedicated to Vern. The Board would like to convey its sorrow.

The Dash Poem by Linda Ellis

I read of a man who stood to speak
At the funeral of his friend.
He referred to the dates on his tombstone
From the beginning to the end.

He noted that first came his date of his birth
And spoke the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between those years.

For that dash represents all the time
That he spent alive on earth...
And now only those who loved him
Know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not how much we own;
The cars, the house, the cash.
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard...
Are there things you’d like to change?
For you never know how much time is left.
(You could be at "dash mid-range)

If we could just slow down enough
To consider what’s true and real,
And always try to understand
The way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger,
And show appreciation more,
And love the people in our lives
Like we’ve never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect
And more often wear a smile...
Remembering that this special dash
Might only last a little while.

So, when your eulogy's being read
With your life’s actions to rehash...
Would you be proud of the things they say
About how you spent your dash?
