The FaGowee International, Sacramento Chapter

July 2005

***VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED***

Eppie’s Great Race
July 16, 2005
8 am to 11 am

Time to start planning for the Eppie’s Great Race.  The race is a triathlon consisting of a runner, a cyclist, and a paddler.  It starts on the bike trail bridge at William Pond Park to Guy West Bridge to Sunrise Ave footbridge to Goethe Park.
No, we’re not looking for participants.  We are looking for VOLUNTEERS to help at the finish line.  We will be taking the popsicle sticks and bib tags from the finishers, and processing them.  I need a few people with special skills to enter the time on the scoreboards.
For four hours of volunteering you get a T-shirt, parking pass, food & drink tickets, and tight buns. There is a big party at Goethe Park after the race. In addition, we will have a pool party. The site year will be at Diane Wilson. She lives near Goethe Park. For those hardy soles, you can park at her house and ride or walk to Goethe Park.

For more information and volunteering, please contact:
Jackie Chesi, 916 344-8413 or j.chesi@comcast.net
Please leave your t-shirt size when you call or email.

Prez Says

I realize that the ski-season is over for all the die-hard skiers, but that’s no reason to put yourself into storage until the next winter. Life goes on, so live it up!! This club still has a lot of non-snow related activities to offer. We offer overnight trips, monthly social activities, and most importantly, we offer comrade, fun, laughs and companionship. What more could a person ask of a club? The club officers are always open to constructive suggestions.
Have you ever thought about making suggestions or comments to help to improve your club? If so, we still have two positions on the Executive Board (Social Chair and Race Chair) open and available for a serious candidate. The qualifications are not really all that hard to meet. They are: 1) You must be breathing, and 2) You should be willing to work with others.
Your Board works together and picks up the slack for other officers when necessary. Don’t feel the weight of the office would be totally on your shoulders – you’d have a good support system to help you. We currently have an Executive Board made up of members who really care about the club and work to try to make things happen. So if you have that irresistible urge to make a difference in this club, please let myself or any other officer know. We’d really be happy to have you on board.
Jackie is always looking for volunteers to work at the finish line at Eppie’s Great Race on Saturday, July 16 from 8am to 11am. It won’t cost you a thing to volunteer except a couple hours of your time. The proceeds of this race go to benefit the Sacramento County Adaptive Leisure Services. Contact Jackie Chesi for more information. There will also be a potluck pool party at Diane Wilson’s home after the event is over. Hope to see you all there.
One last note… our very own Past President, Eric Schmitt will be competing in the kayak portion of this race for a team made up of his co-workers, so come out and wish him well.

ANNUAL ABALONE DIVE & DINE
By: Jim Van Riper & Jon Johnson – Trip Leaders

Get away from it all…. Leave the 100+ summer degree heat of home behind and take the scenic route through the California Redwoods to the cooler weather on the coast north of Mendocino. Join us as we relax among the redwoods and sunbathe on one of the cleanest beaches in Northern California. Take a ride on the Skunk Train through some of the most pristine redwood forests you’ll ever see. Explore the quaint town of Mendocino, test the libations at the brew-pub in Ft. Bragg and join us for a great abalone feast on Saturday night (there will be BBQ chicken for those who have an aversion to abalone).

I plan on holding an Oreo-stacking contest for the kids, a sand sculpting contest for those of all ages, and a campsite-decorating contest for the adults. Prizes will be awarded for the best entries, so hone your skills, dust off your fancy decorations and give it your best shot.

As of this writing, 14 of the 15 R/V sites have been spoken for. I have several others who are asking about R/V site availability, so those who get their payment to me will be guaranteed a site. We still have plenty of tent spaces for the young-at-heart and brave tent-campers available.

FaGOWEE ANNUAL FAMILY PICNIC &
END OF THE WORLD PARTY” RECAP
By: Meredith Meschini & Jim Van Riper

On the weekend of June 3rd to 5th, seven campers descended on Rancho Seco Recreational Park with camping gear and kayaks in tow, and enjoyed kayaking on the lake and the camping offered. (There were a couple last-minute camping wanna-be’s who could not get reservations for a campsite because they were late in deciding to go. Moral of that story – get your reservations in early.) These campers scouted and paved the way for the onslaught of FaGowees who arrived on Saturday for the 2nd annual FaGowee Picnic combined with the annual “End of the World” party.

The club supplied the soft drinks and the BBQ meat for this picnic, and even reimbursed the attendees their entrance fees to the park. Our thanks to Jon Johnson for cooking the burgers and dogs for this potluck event. Those in attendance had a great time. Even the “Weather Gods” showed favor upon us as the weather was warm and sunny (a week earlier, we were still having our unusual rain storms) and the lake was smooth and perfect for kayaking.
There were two FaCademy Awards presented to unsuspecting recipients.
Norman Benedict received one for his major foo-pah for not being able to discern the difference between a urinal and a sink in the restroom at last year’s picnic. (You can figure out which one he relieved himself in.) Past President Eric Schmitt also received one for his lack of true Presidential leadership at last year’s Annual Clam Dig when he promised those in the campground that he’d be there bright and early in the morning to help dig for our dinner, but was ultimately unable to do so because of his self-induced “poor health” as a result of his late-night partying the night before.
I just wanted to note that even though Rancho Seco is the site of a former nuclear power plant, there have been absolutely
NO reports of any attendee glowing in the dark, growing a third eye or additional finger, or any other abnormalities. So for those who might have not attended due to those concerns, please rest assured that we are all normal…all normal…all normal…all normal…all normal…

Hope to see you all there again next year.
