The FaGowee International, Sacramento Chapter

January 2009

OLE! OLE!  LET’S HAVE A FIESTA!

Why wait until May?  It’s cold outside and what better way to warm up than having a hot Mexican dinner?  Whether your favorite is an Enchilada, Taco or one of those sizzling skillet dinners, it’s all good at Garcia’s Mexican Restaurant at 6049 Madison Ave., Carmichael.  For those who are geographically challenged…Garcia’s is near Madison and Manzanita.

Let’s gather ‘round in the bar about 6:30 to get your fill of Margaritas, Dos Equis or what ever your adult beverage of choice may be.  Then, at 7 pm (we have reservations) we’ll mosey on into the dining room to pretend we’re the Tostitos Banditos by ordering some tasty comidas.  I’ve arranged for everyone to have separate checks so that will make it easy on everyone.

I would very much appreciate everyone letting me know…like RSVP...if you are going to join us so I can let Garcia’s know how many beans to put in the pot.  And, if I can tell them how many there will be, they can get the tables set up ahead of time so we can be together and not spread out all over the room.  If you know of any guests or possible new members who would like to meet FaGowees, this would be a good chance to do it.

Mark your calendars!  Tuesday, January 27, 2009, 6:30 at Garcia’s Mexican Restaurant…Aye, yai, yai, yai! Ole!

JANUARY BOARD MEETING!

The January Board meeting will be Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at 6:30 at Kati White’s house.  An Italian dinner will be served and all members are invited to attend.  Please RSVP to Kati at 804-3991 if you are planning on coming so she can put an extra Ravioli or Meatball in the pot for you.  The FaGowee Club’s future, Treasurer’s report, lift ticket availability, and what ever other pertinent subjects President Dick Persons has on the agenda will be discussed.  It’s bound to be a fascinating event!

No Super Bowl Party this year? Oh Dear...

The Super Bowl is Sunday, February 1, 2009 and starts a little after 3 pm.  I have asked in last month’s newsletter and on postcards and emails if anyone would be interested in hosting a Super Bowl Party.  Here’s one more try!  Is there anyone out there who would be willing to step up and host a few FaGowees for one afternoon of great football and even better commercials?  If so, please let me know so Andrea and I can get the word out.  Your participation would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.  Kati White

Prez Says

Thanks to those who have returned to FaGowees for another year.  I hope that this FaGowee Club can provide the events you are looking forward to and even giving you more for your money.  What events would YOU like to have happen again and what kind of new events would you like to see happen?

The Christmas Party went off very nicely. Thank you.  There were about 42 people with the combined groups of FaGowees and eLifeAdventure. The delicious varieties of food just kept coming and the chocolate cake was a delicious finish.  The big winner for the 3 day, 2 night stay at a luxury condo resort in Windsor was Rick Dangles.  Congratz Rick!  There were many more prizes and those who attended were all winners!

To keep everyone in tune to how FaGowees is structured, I wish to remind all of us that to keep putting on our events we do need to share costs.  Sooo, this month is a reality check as to what the clubs organization structure is.  It is a “Not For Profit” club.  It is not to raise excess money but enough to function on.  Yet, people want the club to pay for most things with giving little in return.  Yes, the club has some money and at times it gets close to running out of funds in the checking account.  I have heard…the dues are too high. I have heard that the price of those receiving the newsletter by postal mail should pay more…and they do.  I have heard some events cost too much.  I know times are tough right now but what do YOU want?  I don’t think there should be any increases but I am just one.

Events attendance is dropping.  I know some of you belong to other groups.  What is their status and rules?  What do they do that perhaps FaGowees should do?  The Board is taking an in depth look at other groups who are gaining members.  What are they doing that we are not?  What do YOU want us to do? I’m easy to reach via email or phone so tell me!  Just complaining does no good.  Speak up!  Take action!

With all this being said, we are trying to get people to run for office and this is falling on deaf ears.  So, what is YOUR stand? YOUR opinions?  The next Board meeting is January 13, 2009 at Kati White’s and is open to any member.  YOU do have a say.  Dinner is served so come sit with us and express YOUR views and let the Board know what YOU want.

Snow News is published monthly for the FaGowee International, Sacramento Chapter members. Articles or photos MUST BE to Tracee Carter by the 20th of each month. You may e-mail the information to Tracee or call (509-279-8454). Editor has the right to edit or omit submitted material because of content or space, with Executive Board oversight.

Pictures Wanted!!!
Bob McDonald

We keep a photographic record of FaGowee events.  In case you weren't aware, I do bring the FaGowee photo albums to each and every FaGowee function for all to look at, enjoy and remember those times they depict.  But I cannot keep up with the albums unless I have your photos to include in them.  I depend on you, the general membership, to supply those photos for the albums.

So please take pictures when you're at a FaGowee function and get copies of the prints to me so I can add them to our archives.

For the sake of ease in creating and displaying the photo pages, I'd prefer the prints to be formatted to be 4"x 6" in size.  Also, I would like the event photos to be in groups of 6 so they will take up an entire page in the album.

If you have any questions or photos you'd be willing to part with, please contact me at 916-817-4277.

PICTURES WANTED:

Although I am always looking for photos of all events, right now I'm specifically looking for pictures of FaGowees skiing and racing and having fun at the ski resorts this past ski season.

See Photos Online!!!

ALSO looking for pictures for the newsletter!!!

T’was a Very Merry Christmas Party!
Kati White

Yes, it was a merry Christmas Party indeed!  Forty-two of us, including nine from eLifeAdventure, ate and ate…then ate some more.  This year’s party was at the Capitol City Hotel which used to be the Fulton Inn, or the Clarion or the Ramada or what ever.  We were in the Fulton Room which had recently been remodeled but I think they got the heat mixed up with the air conditioning.

The Christmas tree and decorations were lovely and added much to the ambiance of the room.  People mixed, chatted and enjoyed socializing.  And then once we started to eat, the Hors d’ouvres just kept coming!  There were over 18 different kinds of Hors d’ouvres and a lot of each one.  When one type ran out, another replaced it.  Then we had decadently delicious chocolate cake with Raspberry filling and creamy frosting for dessert. If anyone went home hungry, it was their own fault.  Don Girard seemed to like the BBQ meatballs in particular.

Lee Johnson and Don Girard started off the Karaoke with their version of something but I’m not sure what.  Anyway, it started the merriment and had everyone laughing.  Several people danced, boogied or wiggled to the music.

Rick Dangles was the winner of the Grand Prize of 3 days, 2 nights stay at the luxury condo resort in Windsor donated by President Persons. Bob McDonald won the 5 course, sit-down dinner for six.  Others won lift tickets, full body massage from Eric Schmidt, baskets with all sorts of goodies and other prizes.  Everyone who came received tickets to the Home & Garden Show in January and at the end of the evening, everyone went home winners.

Thank you to everyone who came and made it fun.  I hope you had a very Merry Christmas and that you will all have a Happy, Healthy & Prosperous New Year.

Discount Tickets ~ Robert Rice

Each year the club offers members the chance to purchase lift tickets to the most popular North Tahoe resorts at a discount (usually $9 to $11 below the normal price). Just send in a completed order form and a check to guarantee your tickets. You can also purchase tickets throughout the season while supplies last. And the best part is, you can turn in your tickets at the end of the season by the posted deadline for a credit towards tickets next year.

Members who turned in tickets last spring should have received an order forms with your credits. If you have credits and fail to return your form before the deadline an order will be made to cover your credits. Credits are ski area specific (e.g., if you turned in Homewood tickets your credit is only good for Homewood tickets). Order forms will also be posted on the Sacramento FaGowees website or you can contact me via phone or e-mail and I’ll send you an order form.

As usual the club is offering tickets at the five popular North Tahoe ski areas. Only limited pricing details are available at this time.

Note from your Membership Chair, Andrea Woelfle

I have been fortunate enough to have belonged to the FaGowees for a very long time.  I had moved to Sacramento and knew almost no one.  But I had heard about the FaGowees, when I was still living in LA, riding a ski lift in Steamboat Springs. My seatmate was Carolyn Halcomb (one of the founder members) who told me all about it and I just remember thinking, this is a club that I’d like to join.  So I did!  The club has evolved over the years.  I remember how much fun we had putting on our Christmas shows, those months of brainstorming ideas and rehearsals and then the excitement of performing our numbers in our costumes and makeup.  I remember Wally’s clam digs; how cold it was at 6 a.m. when the tide was out, sticking our faces and whole bodies into the sand to grab the necks of those humongous clams and vowing never to do it ever again.  But then, when we had the big ‘ole clam feast with the chowder and fish and that French bread Wally makes that is more butter than bread, we’d change our minds  and start making plans for the next year.

It's been a while since we did a Christmas show or go clam digging, but we have new traditions such as the Abalone Dine and Dive, the Luau and all our other parties, trips, sports events and, of course, w still ski!  However, it is time to revitalize the club, create new activities and members.  I know that for me, the FaGowee Ski Club has been the basis of so many of my dearest friendships, and interests too.   I had never kayaked before the FaGowees and now I do it all summer and I never skied before as much as I do now.  And I’m sure it’s been the same for all of you.

However, we do need a new spirit to this club and new memberships if we are to be vibrant and healthy.  I know that is something you all want!  One way we are going to deal with this is that we will be sending out an email survey soon so that you can express what activities and events YOU would like to see the club doing. We’d love to have your ideas!  We will also be asking you what you like to do and what kind of activity you’d like to volunteer for.  Volunteering is fun and if you’re in charge of an event, you get to have things YOUR way!   Let’s make this the most fun club in Sacramento!!

But remember, our most important mission right now is to attract new members.  We are starting to get new members from Elife and the Ski Dazzle Show, but let’s get more.  Who do you know that likes to have fun and make new friends?   Who do you know that likes to organize or volunteer?  Who do you know that likes to ski? How about asking that person to be a member?  They can try us out by joining us on a ski day as a prospective member.  If you refer them, you will get $10 FaGowee bucks (see article on page 7) and they will save $10 (reduced price in January only.)  So the next time you’re chatting with a friend of new acquaintance, think of us and talk us up to them.  Yes, for the month of January, membership is only $20 for anyone that hasn’t been a member for over one year.  Come to the next meeting; get some of our business cards and brochures.  Pass them out!

BECOME A MEMBER NOW.  FOR THE MONTH OF JANUARY ONLY, NEW SINGLE MEMBERS ARE ONLY $20 AND NEW COUPLE MEMBERS ARE ONLY $25!  TELL YOUR FRIENDS!!

Race Corner ~ Andrea Woelfle

With all this wonderful new snow, we know this is going to be a great ski and race season.  And this is the year for YOU to race!  It’s challenging, exhilarating and just plain fun.  And the sound of everyone clapping when you’re presented with your medal is going to put a big ‘ole smile on your face!

Registration is quick and easy now; you can even register online if you have already signed your waiver forms and paid up. But it is more fun to get there early and mingle with other racers. Also you need to know what hill you’ll be racing on.

Try it.  You’ll get addicted fast. Call Andrea at 487-9052 for more info or email her.

CODE OF CONDUCT AT FaGOWEE EVENTS
(Adopted and Approved by the FaGowee Executive Board on November 13, 2007)

At each event, the event chairperson has the final say.  Therefore, if you have a problem or concern with the event, you may approach the event coordinator and express your concern in a constructive manner.  If it is not resolved to your satisfaction at that time, do not argue or make a scene.  You may present your concern to the Executive Board in writing or in person at any Executive Board meeting.

All FaGowee events are planned to be fun for all those in attendance.  The Board, as outlined in Article VII, Section 2 of the By-Laws of the FaGowee Constitution, may discipline those persons who unnecessarily or excessively disrupt the fun for others resulting from their rude or obnoxious behavior.

FaGOWEE FUNCTION OR EVENT SIGN-UP LATE FEES
(Approved and Adopted at the Executive Board Meeting on July 11, 2006)

SIGN-UP LATE FEES: On each and every advertised FaGowee club event published in the Snow News newsletter, a sign-up due date will be listed as well as the member and non-member prices to attend that function or event. Any person who signs up and submits their payment for attendance after that published due date will be assessed a 50% late fee penalty. In addition, any person who does not sign up at all to attend a function or event and just shows up at the door will be assessed a 100% late fee penalty (payable in full at that time) before being allowed admittance to that function or event.

FaGOWEE EVENT / TRIP REFUND POLICY
Revised, Approved and Adopted at the Executive Board Meeting, October 8, 2003

  1. The following Refund Policy applies to any Club event for which a fee is charged.

  2. You will automatically receive a 100% refund fur any trip or event cancelled by the Club.

  3. If you cancel and someone takes your place from the waiting list, you will receive a refund of the amount you paid, less a cancellation fee. The cancellation  fee will be $10.00 or 10% of the event/trip fee- whichever is more, unless a specific cancellation fee is advertised for the event/trip.

  4. If you cancel and there is no waiting list, or no one on the list takes your place, you will receive a refund of the amount you paid less a cancellation fee and less any expenses that the Club incurs due to your cancellation.

  5. If you arrange for someone not on the waiting list to take your place, you will be responsible for full payment to the Club plus any transfer fees or costs the Club incurs because of the change. Other money transactions are between you and your replacement. You must provide that replacement with a note for the trip leader or you must confirm the replacement directly with the trip leader prior to the event/trip. The person who submits payment must request all refunds from the Executive Board in writing within 60 days after the completion of the event/trip. The Executive Board will review the final financial report from the event/trip and may approve refunds in accordance with this refund policy.

  6. Any member may appeal to the Executive Board for refunds greater than provided by this policy if special circumstances warrant.

  7. There will be no refund for events that are designated as "Fund Raisers" unless they are cancelled or rescheduled by the Club.

This program excludes the “car rally” which has its own package.
