DANIEL BOONE HALCOMB III

 Dan left us on November 26, at his home in northwest Reno, in the presence of his family, fighting all the way, as he battled his cancer. He was born October 31, 1943 in Tomah, WI, to Dorothy and Daniel Boone Halcomb Jr. He is survived by his wife, Mary, to whom he was married for 25 years; his children, Hannah, Hillary and Hunter, and his siblings, Kimberly Halcomb, Arden Montgomery, Nicola Wiegandt and Wayland Minot. His first grandchild, Riley James Pierce, was born to Hillary and Jeff Pierce just last month. He graduated from Philips Andover Academy and UC Davis with a degree in English. He was editor of the school newspaper at Davis, just like his father. After owning his own advertising agency in Los Angeles for a number of years, he moved to Reno in 1979. Interested in competitive skiing, he founded the Sacramento FaGowees, the Reno Ski and Recreation Club, and was a founding member of the Sierra Ski Council. While successful writing in Reno for various ad agencies and businesses, he nevertheless started his career over in 1993 by receiving his teaching credentials from Sierra Nevada College. He became an English teacher at Reno High School and found there what he really loved in life, educating and inspiring young people. At RHS he took the yearbook and brought it out of debt and made it into an award winning publication. After that he turned his attention to the newspaper and did the same for it, even attaining the highest honor for a high school paper, the NSPA Pacemaker award. He also spearheaded the effort to get RHS an all-weather running track and upgraded football stadium, Stadium 2000. Dan Halcomb will be missed profoundly by his friends and family, and the many children whose lives he enriched while teaching. His family would like to thank Dr. Laura Cunnington, Veronique Pond and Christine Marsh for their care and support. Services were held on December 1st.

Two Scholarships were established in his honor: A Journalism Camp Scholarship and The Dan Halcomb Memorial Scholarship.

Dan Halcomb 1964
as editor of the Daily Aggie at UCD

“Dan was our founder and leader.  Without Don, we never would have met each other.  “ARK ARK ARK: the FaGowee Seal of Approval for a wonderful man.”  Wally Baumgartner, FaGowee member #13

“When I joined the FaGowees, back in the early 1980’s, Dan had already organized the Sacramento chapter and moved to Reno and started the club there. At that time I only knew him by reputation as he was the organizer of the Sacrament and Reno clubs and really active in forming the Sierra League.  We were starting to race and the organization was in its infancy.  I remember my first race in which I was seeded against Kenny Malcom, Fred Del Bello, and Wally Baumgartner.  None of them were afraid of me but I was awed by them.  Dan was organizing this and it went smooth. The Sierra League was a member of the Far West Ski Association and was sponsored by a local beer distributor.  I went to several of the Far West meetings and there I met Dan and I was impressed by his organizational skills.  The beer company had decided to not sponsor the league any longer and the powers to be in the Far West were looking for a new sponsor and they came up with a cigarette company.  As much as Dan wanted this sponsorship he said that he wouldn’t ski for a tobacco company.  I was greatly impressed by this and have always remembered and respected him for that.  He was a very friendly person and always made you feel like you were a friend that he had known for a long time.  This will be his legacy as he was very principled and stood up for what he believed and will be remembered for that.” Lee Johnson

“He was a great man, skier, and pal.”  Patty Estlander Colmer

“I remember our races well.  We didn’t have electronic timers back then so Dan handled the countdown with gusto...He and I always raced against each other and he, being the superb skier that he was, always beat me.  Except for our last race against each when I had the flu and decided not to go for it. Go figure!” Fred Dal Bello

Pictures Wanted!!!
Bob McDonald

Take pictures of any FaGowees having fun so I can include them in our photo albums. The albums are brought to each and every FaGowee function with the photos of our past events, and I depend on you, the general membership, to supply those photos for the albums.

So...get those pictures taken so I can add them to our archives.

For the sake of ease in creating and displaying the photo pages, I’d prefer the prints to be 4”x 6” in size. Also, I would like them in groups of 6 so that they will take up a whole page in the album.

If you have any questions, or photos you’d like to part with, please contact me at 817-4277.

I’m Looking For Any Pics of Club Activities:

Fall Foothills, Goldpoint, Hopscotch, Halloween Party,
Bike Ride & General Snow Pics.

ALSO looking for pictures for the newsletter!!!

FaGOWEE FUNCTION OR EVENT SIGN-UP LATE FEES
(Approved and Adopted at the Executive Board Meeting on July 11, 2006)

SIGN-UP LATE FEES: On each and every advertised FaGowee club event published in the Snow News newsletter, a sign-up due date will be listed as well as the member and non-member prices to attend that function or event. Any person who signs up and submits their payment for attendance after that published due date will be assessed a 50% late fee penalty. In addition, any person who does not sign up at all to attend a function or event and just shows up at the door will be assessed a 100% late fee penalty (payable in full at that time) before being allowed admittance to that function or event.

FaGOWEE EVENT / TRIP REFUND POLICY
Revised, Approved and Adopted at the Executive Board Meeting, October 8, 2003

  1. The following Refund Policy applies to any Club event for which a fee is charged.

  2. You will automatically receive a 100% refund fur any trip or event cancelled by the Club.

  3. If you cancel and someone takes your place from the waiting list, you will receive a refund of the amount you paid, less a cancellation fee. The cancellation  fee will be $10.00 or 10% of the event/trip fee- whichever is more, unless a specific cancellation fee is advertised for the event/trip.

  4. If you cancel and there is no waiting list, or no one on the list takes your place, you will receive a refund of the amount you paid less a cancellation fee and less any expenses that the Club incurs due to your cancellation.

  5. If you arrange for someone not on the waiting list to take your place, you will be responsible for full payment to the Club plus any transfer fees or costs the Club incurs because of the change. Other money transactions are between you and your replacement. You must provide that replacement with a note for the trip leader or you must confirm the replacement directly with the trip leader prior to the event/trip. The person who submits payment must request all refunds from the Executive Board in writing within 60 days after the completion of the event/trip. The Executive Board will review the final financial report from the event/trip and may approve refunds in accordance with this refund policy.

  6. Any member may appeal to the Executive Board for refunds greater than provided by this policy if special circumstances warrant.

  7. There will be no refund for events that are designated as "Fund Raisers" unless they are cancelled or rescheduled by the Club.

Ski, bowling, snowshoe…….
What would you like to do?

It’s your turn to help out the club.  We need someone to be in charge of a snowshoe day, preferably in February, but March would be fine too. Please refer to the article in Snow News from February 2005: http://www.sacramentofagowees.org/Archives/Jan2005NewsletterArchive.htm.

It will give you a blueprint on what to do.  Call any board member if you need help.

 We are also looking for someone to put together a bowling event.  It will be easy too.  Make a reservation for 4 lanes at a conveniently located bowling alley and then give FaGowees enough time to sign up in advance.  This will give you time to cancel any excess lanes you might have reserved.  The bowling could be followed by a dining event if you like.  Reservations are not available in most bowling alleys Tuesday thru Thursday evenings because of league play.

Hopefully, you can schedule your event in time to get an article in the newsletter!!
(Articles are due the 20th of the month; email your article to Jim van Riper p2forever@surewest.net.
If not, email andreajoew@sbcglobal.net and your email will go out to all our members.
Make sure the event doesn’t conflict with any major FaGowee events.

Let’s ski together

Are you interested in skiing with others?  Of course you are!!  Then decide on a day and place you (or you and a friend) want to ski and then email andreajoew@sbcglobal.net  and your email will be forwarded to the whole membership.  It is SO easy and such a good way to find others to ski with.

Race Corner ~ Andrea Woelfle

The races in December were cancelled due to snow conditions. They are tentatively rescheduled for the weekend of March 22-23.   This is great news; it means you haven’t missed any races yet!  The first two races of the season are therefore January 12-13.

Racing is a great way to have fun with the added bonus of burning off the Holiday calories!  Race against people that ski the same level as you (there are 10 classes), make new friends and really improve your skiing.  Races are $20 each; first time racers are free!

If you think you will race more that 3 times, it pays to get a season race pass, but YOU NEED TO HURRY! Race passes cover 9 races. Your race pass is subsidized by $25 by the FaGowees; no other clubs do this.  Your cost will be $95
(9 races + refundable gatekeepers’ fee) Also; you get substantial discounts on lift tickets at these resorts on race day.  If you pre-pay for the races, you can register on-line, which means no more dragging yourself out of bed at 5:30 to get yourself to registration by 8:30 am!

Please send your $95 check, made out to the FaGowee Ski Club to FaGowee Ski Club, 4002 Hillcrest Lane, Sacramento CA 95821.  You MUST enclose the waiver form for Sierra League. To save time at future races and enable you to pre-register for races download the resort individual waiver forms which you can download from the Sierra League’s home page:  http://www.sierraleague.com/home

Where to Register for Racing
Race registration is between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. at the following locations:

 Northstar: Next to Children Center across from skating rink.

 Homewood: Bar at the South Lodge (formerly Tahoe Ski Bowl).

 Diamond Peak: Bar upstairs over cafeteria in the main lodge.

READY TO RIP THE ROAD???

FaGowee Car Rally 2008

Do we know the exact date yet? No! But we will soon and we’ll let you know when we know so you can mark your calendars for probably either Sept. 27-28 or Oct. 4 & 5.  Be sure and tell your friends and any lost FaGowees so they can join in on the trek. The number of participants will be slightly limited so those that will want to be on the road with us should sign up as soon as the tickets become available, probably by early June.  The 2008 Road Rally is one you won’t want to miss!

Dick Persons and Kati White have agreed to chair the 2008 FaGowee Car Rally. We will be joined by a

Committee of David & Danielle, Sandy & Fred, Andrea and Norm to plan and pull this off.   We would like to have input from members and helpful suggestions as to where you would like to go. Do you know of any unique, boutique, lovely and not to expensive places the tribe could overnight in say…Napa, Concord, Sonora, Truckee, Santa Rosa, Forest Hill, even Yuba City could be fun! (Yeah…right!) If you haven’t been there

before, maybe it’s someplace you’d like to finally stay for a night. The more unique the place, the better.  There could be a prize for you if we end up in the location you’ve suggested.  We do want to stay within a

60 – 80 mile radius or two hour drive home to Sacramento. Want to feel like you’ve actually been away for a weekend? We’ll have that in mind with your suggestions and our planning.

Sorry, but Vegas is a little too far out of the way and the Bay Area is too congested! And, No, we will not be camping. You’ll get to sleep in a real bed with a bathroom very close by! Any other questions?

We want the 2008 Car Rally to be one you’ll never forget so help us out!

 Contact:
Dick Persons OR
Kati White
with your ideas and suggestions.

Let’s give all FaGowees something to look forward to in the Fall of 2008!

A Toast to Ring in the New Year

May your battles be few and your pleasures be many;
May your wishes and dreams be fulfilled?
May your confidence stand in the face of loss
and give you the strength to rebuild;

May peace of heart fill all your days;
May serenity grace your soul;
May tranquil moments bless your life
and keep your spirit whole;

At the sound of the tolling midnight bell
Year 2008 will begin.
Let’s raise our hopes in a confidant toast
To the promises it ushers in:

To leave the old with a burst of song;
To recall the rights and forget the wrongs;
To forget the things that bind you fast;
To the vain regrets of the year that’s past;

To have the strength to let go your hold
of the not worthwhile from the days grown old;
To dare go forth with a purpose true;
To the unknown tasks in the year that’s new;

To help your brothers along the road;
To help where it’s needed, and to lighten their load.
And to add your gift to the world’s good cheer
is to have, and to give, a
Happy New Year.

2008
May your New Year be filled with peace, hope, joy and new beginnings

Happy New Year from the Executive Board

Christmas Party Thanks from the FaGowees

Also very special thanks go to Kati White who, with Dick Persons’ help, donated bags filled with mugs, hot chocolate and other treats that turned each table to into colorful Christmas displays.

And almost last, but certainly not least, the FaGowees take their hats off in tribute to Tobie and Lee who spent countless hours assisting in solicitation of business gifts as well as helping at the party and also to Danielle who also contacted merchants with success.

And lastly, many thanks to the helpers at the party including Lee, Tobie, Myra, Sandy Lange, Steve Sommers and our great MC, Jim Van Riper.

Christmas Party Recap

What an event, it was the attraction of the year.  The FaGowee umpteenth annual Christmas Party at the Carmichael Elks club.  Through the tireless effort of our Veep Andrea Woelfle the party was a smashing success from the exquisite dinner to the dancing music of The Ridge Riders. 51 FaGowee members and their guests came from far and wide to be entertained, amused and catered to.  They came from Tahoe City, Placerville, El Grove and Rio Linda.  It was great to see so many friends dancing and enjoying them selves in the fellowship and camaraderie that only comes from the great relationships with so many old friends that has lasted through the years.  Jim Van Riper eloquently MC’d the event and introduced the President Jon Johnson, the Ridge Riders, and thanked Andrea for here hard work and perseverance in planning and doing what was necessary to produce the function.  Jim did a great job in running the raffle in which an abundance of prizes were awarded to the lucky ticket holders.  Prizes.  .  Kudos are in order for the dancing prowess of the  handsome FaGowee bachelors including .Steve Somer, Dick Taylor, Mark Hadley Don Girard and different partners   as well as all the lovely couples gracing the dance floor accompanied by the music of the Ridge Riders.  Welcome to Phyllis Figlioli who we haven’t seen for a spell and Jackie Chesi.  Everyone enjoyed the evening and it was another great FaGowee event.

YIKES!! HAVE YOU SEEN THE PRICE OF GAS LATELY???

Do you peer at the price of gas and wonder how you can avoid bankruptcy?  Here are some tips from Richard Dangles, as per Internet sources.

  1. Fill up your car or truck in the morning when the temperature is still cool.  Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground; and the colder the ground, the denser the gasoline. When it gets warmer gasoline expands, so if you're filling up in the afternoon or in the evening, what should be a gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and temperature of the fuel (gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products) are significant. Every truckload that we load is temperature-compensated so that the indicated gallon gage is actually the amount pumped. A one-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for businesses, but service stations don't have temperature compensation at their pumps.

  2. If a tanker truck is filling the station's tank at the time you want to buy gas, do not fill up; most likely dirt and sludge in the tank is being stirred up when gas is being delivered, and you might be transferring that dirt from the bottom of their tank into your car's tank.

  3. Fill up when your gas tank is half-full (or half-empty), because the more gas you have in your tank the less air there is and gasoline evaporates rapidly, especially when it's warm. (Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof membrane to act as a barrier between the gas and the atmosphere, thereby minimizing evaporation.)

  4. If you look at the trigger you'll see that it has three delivery settings:  slow, medium and high. When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to the high setting. You should be pumping at the slow setting, thereby minimizing vapors created while you are pumping. Hoses at the pump are corrugated; the corrugations act as a return path for vapor recovery from gas that already has been metered. If you are pumping at the high setting, the agitated gasoline contains more vapors, which is being sucked back into the underground tank, so you're getting less gas for your money.

 Hope this will help ease your 'pain at the pump'
