The FaGowee International, Sacramento Chapter

January 2006

As Hosting Branch of BASH 2006, Washington would like to invite our

fellow FaGowees to join us next January in Sun Valley, Idaho.

January 21-28, 2006

Celebrating the 70th Anniversary of Sun Valley

Come join your fellow FaGowees in celebrating the Sun Valley 70th year anniversary. Sun Valley offers something for everyone, skiers and non-skiers alike, whether your interest lies in relaxation or exhilaration, you’ll find plenty to do (or not to do) during your vacation. Not only does Sun Valley offering skiing, but there is an abundance of other activities available, from heated pools, to the necessary hot tub, bowling, ice skating, shopping, movies and more.

For the skier or boarder of all levels, beginner to expert, plan for a week of peak season skiing at off season prices.
Sun Valley offers 3,400 vertical feet, 2,054 skiable acres, and 75 plus runs for endless days of new trails and fresh powder. Everyday you have the choice of skiing Bald Mountain (Mt. Baldy) or Dollar Mountain with an interchangeable lift ticket. Like having the skis on your feet but not pointed downhill? The Sun Valley Nordic and Snowshoe Center offers cross country skiers about 25 miles of manicured and marked trails and a wide variety of classical, skate skiing, and ski touring.

For the less than avid skier or non-skier, Sun Valley has a lift ticket exchange program giving your ticket cash value. Possible trades, how about a massage, or a sleigh ride, put some blades on your feet and give their
ice skating rink a spin, or what about a dinner and movie, the possibilities are endless.

Prez Says

By the time this is published, our Annual FaGowee Christmas Party will have taken place at the Buggy Whip Restaurant. I personally was unable to attend because of other family obligations that took precedence. I’m sure those in attendance had a good time.

When I spoke to the banquet manager at the Buggy Whip (Larry LeSieur) during the first week of December, he mentioned that he liked to ski. I told him of many of the events our club has to offer in addition to the skiing and he asked me if I could provide him with a membership application. Karen has followed up on his request, so we may have a new FaGowee in our midst soon. I don’t know what originally brought you as an individual to joining the FaGowee Ski Club, but someone’s word of mouth did it for me. I don’t know of any of you who are too shy to talk to people. Talking is the best advertisement we can have, and it’s the best way to increase the interest and membership in the club.

As we enter into the New Year, most of us will be making our New Year’s resolutions, which most of us then promptly break within the first 72 hours. I have personally made two resolutions that I will definitely NOT break this year. The first is that I will not co-sign for any personal loans for any hitchhikers that I may pick up along the road. The second is that I will lose a minimum of 25 pounds before the end of the 2006. If I don’t lose that much weight (and keep it off) by that time, I will personally buy a libation of choice for each person attending the General Meeting in January 2007 (and YES – you all can hold me to that). The only stipulation to this offer is that you must be present at that meeting to receive that libation.

Have a safe, healthy and happy ski season. I hope you each have a prosperous and Happy New Year. Be sure to show your love to others and allow yourself to be loved.

READ YOUR NEWSLETTER

As I close, I want to leave you with this one last thought… Whether you agree or disagree with the decisions and military policies of our nation’s government, we do need to support our troops. Keep them all in your thoughts and prayers.
They have each volunteered to serve you and they deserve no less.

****THE SKI SEASON IS HERE!!!!****
By: Bob McDonald

Celebrate the new ski season with pictures! Then I can include them in our photo albums. I bring a photo album to each and every FaGowee function with the photos of our past events, and I depend on you, the general membership, to supply those photos for the albums. If you have any pics of any FaGowee’s having fun, please get them to me so I can add them to our archives. For the sake of ease in creating and displaying the photo pages, I’d prefer the prints to be 4”x 6” in size.
If you have any questions of photos you’d like to part with, please contact me at 916-817-4277.

FaGOWEE CHRISTMAS PARTY 2005 Recap

Lee Johnson

We met at the Buggy Whip December 10 to celebrate another year of great times with friends, fellow club members and guests:  Forty-one to be exact.  The prime rib was delicious, the salmon exquisite, and the baked chicken perfect.  The band "Walkin’ the Dawg" played for our dancing pleasure until the wee hours.  They did some great Beetle numbers that brought nostalgia for those who could remember. Danielle Bartol surprised David Sliper with a surprise birthday party on the occasion.  It was one of those wasted birthdays where you don't need it to buy a drink and it wasn't enough to retire.
Marilyn Miller was seen leaving with a strange man, but she is OK.

Everyone had a great time and now we
have to get ready for next year.

FaGOWEE EVENT / TRIP REFUND POLICY
Revised, Approved and Adopted at the Executive Board Meeting, October 8, 2003

  1. The following Refund Policy applies to any Club event for which a fee is charged.

  2. You will automatically receive a 100% refund fur any trip or event cancelled by the Club.

  3. If you cancel and someone takes your place from the waiting list, you will receive a refund of the amount you paid, less a cancellation fee. The cancellation  fee will be $10.00 or 10% of the event/trip fee- whichever is more, unless a specific cancellation fee is advertised for the event/trip.

  4. If you cancel and there is no waiting list, or no one on the list takes your place, you will receive a refund of the amount you paid less a cancellation fee and less any expenses that the Club incurs due to your cancellation.

  5. If you arrange for someone not on the waiting list to take your place, you will be responsible for full payment to the Club plus any transfer fees or costs the Club incurs because of the change. Other money transactions are between you and your replacement. You must provide that replacement with a note for the trip leader or you must confirm the replacement directly with the trip leader prior to the event/trip. The person who submits payment must request all refunds from the Executive Board in writing within 60 days after the completion of the event/trip. The Executive Board will review the final financial report from the event/trip and may approve refunds in accordance with this refund policy.

  6. Any member may appeal to the Executive Board for refunds greater than provided by this policy if special circumstances warrant.

  7. There will be no refund for events that are designated as "Fund Raisers" unless they are cancelled or rescheduled by the Club.

Discount Tickets

Each fall the Sacramento FaGowee Ski Club offers club members the opportunity to purchases lift tickets for North Tahoe ski resort at a discount (usually about $10 off the regular price). The best part is that unused tickets may be turned in at the end of the season by the posted deadline for a credit towards the next season.  The deadline for pre-orders for this season has come and gone. But there are still tickets available for all five North Tahoe ski areas on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Alpine Meadows – Discount price: $39 ($49 upgrade during holidays).  Subject to blackout dates during holidays (12/25/05 - 1/1/06, 1/14/06 - 1/16/06, and 2/18/06 - 2/20/06).  Can be upgraded to beginner ski/snowboard package at no additional cost (non-holiday only).

Homewood – Discount price: $34 ($11 off reg. weekend prices, $7 more than weekday price of $27 ~ Mon-Thurs, non-Holiday).

Northstar-at-Tahoe/Sierra-at-Tahoe – Discount price: $51 ($62 regular) includes $8 food & beverage voucher when tickets are used at Sierra-at-Tahoe.  Can also be used for first time ski/snowboard package, 4 snow tubing tickets, 1 XC package, 2 XC trail passes, ½ day child lesson (not little bandits), during the summer for golf (Sun-Thur after 1 pm) and mountain biking.

Squaw Valley – Discount price: $53 ($9 off reg. price) Can also be used during the summer for carious activities.

FaGowee Race Information

The FaGowees race in the Sierra League, which is comprised of several ski clubs in Northern California and the Reno area.  Racer levels range from low intermediate to expert.  There are 10 ability levels with two age groups in each level.  You race against skiers that have the age and ability as you do!

Everyone is there to have fun and to improve their skiing while having a friendly competition.  There are GS, slalom and one giant slalom races each season for a total of 8 races plus the NorCal and Far West finals.

Races are $20 each or you can buy a race pass for about $75 (FaGowees subsidize your race pass by $25, making your membership almost free! And you also get a wonderful gift if you race 3 times in a season.) You (and your friends that show up in the morning to register for the races) get discounted lift tickets on race day!

Scared to race?  Don’t despair!

The first race is free and there are several race clinics, including those before the first races, which are sponsored by the Sierra League.

Race Corner
Andrea Woelfle

Hey, non-racers: If you’re feeling that it’s really time to improve your skiing, keep in mind that learning to race is one of the very best ways! Try it! Don’t forget first time racers are free!

Racers: Don’t forget that the races originally scheduled for December 10th and 11th were cancelled due to lack of snow and have been rescheduled to January 7-8.  This means that the race clinics that were scheduled for December and then postponed to January 7-8 will have to be postponed again and no dates have been set yet.

If you haven’t already gotten your race pass, it’s not too late!  Contact Andrea Woelfle at 487-9052 or andreajoew@sbcglobal.net to get your discounted race pass.  If you want to register for races on-line, you will need to pre-pay for those races first either through a race pass purchase or individually for each race.  You will also need to fill out the release forms for the individual resorts, which are available on the FaGowee website on the Race page. Send pre-payments and release forms in to Frank App, made out to Sierra League.   Frank’s address is 526 Wolf Tree, Truckee CA 96161.

Sierra League no longer has the white tent at Northstar.  Watch for news on where to meet for registration.

If you didn’t get a season pass, but want race and clinic updates,
contact Andrea with your email list and you will get all the latest news.

It is still possible to go on the Telluride trip, but there is a 3-person waiting list.
