The FaGowee International, Sacramento Chapter

February 2009

February Board Meeting

February’s Board meeting will be on Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at 6:30.  Bob McDonald will be our gracious host for this meeting.  Dinner will be “Chef’s Surprise” since it’s up to Monsieur McDonald to provide the sustenance for our bodies.  If you would like to come along and have whatever Bob decides to provide, his address is 1078 Perazzo Circle, Folsom, 95630.  Vice President Jon Johnson and I have never been to Bob’s abode so we are curious to see his computer set up that never seems to work.  If you are coming to the meeting, please let Bob know. 817-4277. I’d suggest you email him but we know how that goes…or doesn’t.

Wine & Dine in February

Sip, Savor & Socialize during the February Social Meeting.  Mark Tuesday, February 24, 2009 on your calendar for the February Social Meeting. Join us at Rascal’s Pub, 9819 Horn Road, Sacramento at 6:30 for free wine tasting and all your Pub favorites.  There’s steak, sandwiches, burgers, chicken, pasta and more so you’re bound to find something on the menu that will satisfy your taste buds.

Rascal’s is easy to find because it right on the corner of Folsom Blvd. & Horn Road.  Plenty of parking right in front.  Come on in to the bar where we will gather first, then move on into the dining room around 7 pm for our repast.

Please RSVP to Kati at either Email or (916) 804-3991 if you are going to be joining us.  We want to be sure and save a seat for you.  Thanks.

St. Patty’s Party Anyone?

Is there anyone out there who would like to Host a St. Patrick’s Party in March?

You pick the day and no matter what day that is, it will be St. Pat’s Day as far as we’re concerned.  The party can either be at someone’s home or you pick the place where you would like the rest of us to come and join you.  There are lots of places that will be having specials, even coupons for 2 for 1, etc. so it’s an easy thing to Host.  Since Kati has to take things a little easier, your help would be greatly appreciated.  Just either email Kati at Email or call her at (916) 804-3991 and tell her you would be glad to Host the St. Pat’s Party and you’ll even get FaGowee Bucks for doing it.

DON'T FORGET TO JOIN US AT THE
SOCIAL MEETINGS!
See Page 4 for times and places!

Prez Says

January 20th brought us a new President for our country, and with this we all give good will and look forward to a bright future

Here it is the most important month of the year.  There is Lincoln’s birthday on the 12th, Valentines Day on the 14th, Washington’s Birthday on the 22nd, Ash Wednesday on the 25th.  Then there is congress’s declaration of President’s Day on the 16th

The mountains are full of snow and every where else the fireplaces are giving up warmth for all of us lowlanders.

January social was a Mexican Fiesta at Garcia’s with great conversation and delightful friends; again the faithful were well in attendance.

Thanks to u’ all. Now where will you be for that special day for lovers? Check your social calendars for all up coming events. We look forward to see you all again at next month social.  Thanks for your viewing.  Remember you all are special.

Pictures Wanted!!!
Bob McDonald

We keep a photographic record of FaGowee events.  In case you weren't aware, I do bring the FaGowee photo albums to each and every FaGowee function for all to look at, enjoy and remember those times they depict.  But I cannot keep up with the albums unless I have your photos to include in them.  I depend on you, the general membership, to supply those photos for the albums.

So please take pictures when you're at a FaGowee function and get copies of the prints to me so I can add them to our archives.

For the sake of ease in creating and displaying the photo pages, I'd prefer the prints to be formatted to be 4"x 6" in size.  Also, I would like the event photos to be in groups of 6 so they will take up an entire page in the album.

If you have any questions or photos you'd be willing to part with, please contact me at 916-817-4277.

PICTURES WANTED:

Although I am always looking for photos of all events, right now I'm specifically looking for pictures of FaGowees skiing and racing and having fun at the ski resorts this past ski season.

See Photos Online!!!

ALSO looking for pictures for the newsletter!!!

Discount Tickets ~ Robert Rice

Each year the club offers members the chance to purchase lift tickets to the most popular North Tahoe resorts at a discount (usually $9 to $11 below the normal price). Just send in a completed order form and a check to get tickets at the beginning of the season. And the best part is, you can turn in your tickets at the end of the season by the posted deadline for a credit towards tickets next year. The Order Form is posted on the Sacramento FaGowees web site or you can contact me via phone or e-mail and I’ll send you an order form.

All tickets are direct to lift, which means that you don’t have to go to the ticket window. Squaw Valley uses an electronic ticket scanner which means you just put your ticket in your pants pocket and your ticket is read remotely. Place only ONE Squaw ticket in your pocket per day. Tickets are still available for five popular North Tahoe ski areas.

Race Corner ~ Andrea Woelfle

This is STILL the year for YOU to race!  You’ve only missed 2 races and the best are yet to come! To race!  It’s challenging, exhilarating and just plain fun. You may feel you are going fast, but actually in a slalom, you’re actually only going about 15-20 miles per hour.

You never know what to expect.  You think the race is going to be a snap, and then  you fall and blow it (as happened to our racers at our Tahoe Donner races last month)  But then, when you find out you won even though you did felt awkward in the race, the smile won’t stop.

When they put the medal around your neck and you hear the applause of your racer buddies, you’ll try not to grin, but you will.  And even if you don’t win, it’s fun to get together for the après-ski awards ceremony and just discuss the merits of different kinds of beer they serve.   If you want you can register on line (as long as you are prepaid and filled out the waiver e form for the resort.) But it’s more fun to get there early, find out what hill and what time your race will be, mingle with other racers and hook up for free skiing.

It’s a better addiction than drugs or alcohol, so try it!  Call Andrea at 487-9052 for more info or email.

CODE OF CONDUCT AT FaGOWEE EVENTS
(Adopted and Approved by the FaGowee Executive Board on November 13, 2007)

At each event, the event chairperson has the final say.  Therefore, if you have a problem or concern with the event, you may approach the event coordinator and express your concern in a constructive manner.  If it is not resolved to your satisfaction at that time, do not argue or make a scene.  You may present your concern to the Executive Board in writing or in person at any Executive Board meeting.

All FaGowee events are planned to be fun for all those in attendance.  The Board, as outlined in Article VII, Section 2 of the By-Laws of the FaGowee Constitution, may discipline those persons who unnecessarily or excessively disrupt the fun for others resulting from their rude or obnoxious behavior.

FaGOWEE FUNCTION OR EVENT SIGN-UP LATE FEES
(Approved and Adopted at the Executive Board Meeting on July 11, 2006)

SIGN-UP LATE FEES: On each and every advertised FaGowee club event published in the Snow News newsletter, a sign-up due date will be listed as well as the member and non-member prices to attend that function or event. Any person who signs up and submits their payment for attendance after that published due date will be assessed a 50% late fee penalty. In addition, any person who does not sign up at all to attend a function or event and just shows up at the door will be assessed a 100% late fee penalty (payable in full at that time) before being allowed admittance to that function or event.

FaGOWEE EVENT / TRIP REFUND POLICY
Revised, Approved and Adopted at the Executive Board Meeting, October 8, 2003

  1. The following Refund Policy applies to any Club event for which a fee is charged.

  2. You will automatically receive a 100% refund fur any trip or event cancelled by the Club.

  3. If you cancel and someone takes your place from the waiting list, you will receive a refund of the amount you paid, less a cancellation fee. The cancellation  fee will be $10.00 or 10% of the event/trip fee- whichever is more, unless a specific cancellation fee is advertised for the event/trip.

  4. If you cancel and there is no waiting list, or no one on the list takes your place, you will receive a refund of the amount you paid less a cancellation fee and less any expenses that the Club incurs due to your cancellation.

  5. If you arrange for someone not on the waiting list to take your place, you will be responsible for full payment to the Club plus any transfer fees or costs the Club incurs because of the change. Other money transactions are between you and your replacement. You must provide that replacement with a note for the trip leader or you must confirm the replacement directly with the trip leader prior to the event/trip. The person who submits payment must request all refunds from the Executive Board in writing within 60 days after the completion of the event/trip. The Executive Board will review the final financial report from the event/trip and may approve refunds in accordance with this refund policy.

  6. Any member may appeal to the Executive Board for refunds greater than provided by this policy if special circumstances warrant.

  7. There will be no refund for events that are designated as "Fund Raisers" unless they are cancelled or rescheduled by the Club.

What would you do if…???
By Kati White

Let’s throw out some hypothetical questions here. Let me wax philosophical for a moment. Now, most of us know the attendance at most events is sadly lacking. The club may have almost 60 members but in reality, there’s a core group of about 25 or so faithful who do participate and as a result, have a pretty darn good time at what ever it is we’re doing. But…who are these other people and why do they belong? What is it that FaGowees needs to do to get more people out of their comfort zone or where ever they are and actually come to social meetings or parties or what ever? Let’s think positive here, folks, and speak up about what you would like to have the FaGowees do that YOU would enjoy!  It’s no fun for event leaders to put in a lot of work and then have no one show up.

When I joined FaGowees in 1988, the club had nearly 300 members, mostly single and most of us were skiers. In 2008, the club has less than 60 members, most are married and I was recently told there are only TWO racers left and maybe 20 or so skiers. The whole make up of the club has changed completely! And, let’s face it…most of us are 20 years older than we were in 1988!  Things have changed and we need to make some changes too in order to do things that would be to MEMBERS BENEFIT.

As you can see from the Treasurer’s Report elsewhere in the newsletter, FaGowees has some money but it’s not a wealthy club. You can take a look for yourself and see what’s there and how it’s being spent.  As our President pointed out, FaGowees is a Not-For-Profit club.  As our Treasurer, Lee Johnson, has pointed out, we can’t spend the money for frivolous things but it (the money) can be used for things that benefit the members. The whole Board of Directors has agreed to that fact.  And, lately, funds have been used to benefit members. The Christmas Party cost $25.00 per person.  The club paid the extra $280.00 cost in order to keep the price down.  Year’s past, the club has set aside as much as $500 to pay for the Christmas Party. The Luau should have charged everyone $45 - $48.00 per person but the club made up the difference so those members that came could have a grand Luau.

So, we come down to the bottom line.  If the club is to sensibly, realistically and practically spend YOUR dues money on things and events YOU would like to see happen…Things or events YOU would attend, WHAT ARE THEY?   Help us help FaGowees put on or do things where YOU will come! Do YOU want the money to sit there for perpetuity or go to some other ski club?  Voice your opinion! Tell the Board!  Come to the Board meetings! We even feed you when you attend! It’s YOUR club. What are your suggestions? (Be nice, here folks). Bob Mac thinks paid members should go on a FaGowee sponsored cruise. Another suggestion was surfing lessons on Maui, complete with hotel & air fare, of course. But, we have to be realistic, not frivolous, but we can have fun if YOU will just give us some positive input on what YOU would do if the club was willing to use some of the funds for members benefit.

Now…don’t just sit there! Let those fingers fly across the keyboard and send the Board your suggestions!  Meanwhile, hope your 2009 is a Prosperous & Healthy New Year and we’ll see you at the next Board or Social meeting.
