MARCH SKI DAY

Start preparing to have an exhilarating ski day at Squaw Valley on Saturday, March 9.  Mark Hadley is in charge.  We’ll all meet at Dave’s Deli at Squaw at 9 a.m.  Those that want to carpool should contact Mark early in the week at 530-906-2334.  It is being suggested that carpoolers meet near Brookfield’s on Taylor Road in Roseville at 7:00, leaving promptly at 7:15.  Directions: I80 to Eureka Road Exit, straight to Taylor Road, past In & Out Burgers, Shell station; turn Left into the Park and Ride.  If you are going to end up late at Squaw, call Mark.

We’ll lunch together and after skiing meet at the Le Chamois, upstairs, near Squaw Valley Sports and the tram building for beer and hors d’oeuvres (e.g., French fries). If you need a discount ticket, contact Rob Rice, well in advance, at 996-9842.

Mark has a season pass at Squaw and know all the fun places.

You are going to have SO much fun!

Prez Says

The ski season is underway, finally! While December was disappointing for those of us who enjoy getting an early start to the season, the storms after the New Year have improved things greatly!

Volunteering!!! That is and always has been the basis of our Club, and is the basis of any successful non-profit organization. We on the Board see better than the general membership how many people it takes to keep the Club activities running smoothly. So if you are interested in becoming more involved, please take to me or any member of the Board. OK now let's go skiing!

Pictures Wanted!!!
Bob McDonald

Take pictures of any FaGowees having fun so I can include them in our photo albums. The albums are brought to each and every FaGowee function with the photos of our past events, and I depend on you, the general membership, to supply those photos for the albums.

So...get those pictures taken so I can add them to our archives.

For the sake of ease in creating and displaying the photo pages, I’d prefer the prints to be 4”x 6” in size. Also, I would like them in groups of 6 so that they will take up a whole page in the album.

If you have any questions, or photos you’d like to part with, please contact me at 817-4277.

I’m Looking For Any Pics of Club Activities:

Fall Foothills, Goldpoint, Hopscotch, Halloween Party,
Bike Ride & General Snow Pics.

ALSO looking for pictures for the newsletter!!!

CODE OF CONDUCT AT FaGOWEE EVENTS
(Adopted and Approved by the FaGowee Executive Board on November 13, 2007)

At each event, the event chairperson has the final say.  Therefore, if you have a problem or concern with the event, you may approach the event coordinator and express your concern in a constructive manner.  If it is not resolved to your satisfaction at that time, do not argue or make a scene.  You may present your concern to the Executive Board in writing or in person at any Executive Board meeting.

All FaGowee events are planned to be fun for all those in attendance.  The Board, as outlined in Article VII, Section 2 of the By-Laws of the FaGowee Constitution, may discipline those persons who unnecessarily or excessively disrupt the fun for others resulting from their rude or obnoxious behavior.

FaGOWEE FUNCTION OR EVENT SIGN-UP LATE FEES
(Approved and Adopted at the Executive Board Meeting on July 11, 2006)

SIGN-UP LATE FEES: On each and every advertised FaGowee club event published in the Snow News newsletter, a sign-up due date will be listed as well as the member and non-member prices to attend that function or event. Any person who signs up and submits their payment for attendance after that published due date will be assessed a 50% late fee penalty. In addition, any person who does not sign up at all to attend a function or event and just shows up at the door will be assessed a 100% late fee penalty (payable in full at that time) before being allowed admittance to that function or event.

FaGOWEE EVENT / TRIP REFUND POLICY
Revised, Approved and Adopted at the Executive Board Meeting, October 8, 2003

  1. The following Refund Policy applies to any Club event for which a fee is charged.

  2. You will automatically receive a 100% refund fur any trip or event cancelled by the Club.

  3. If you cancel and someone takes your place from the waiting list, you will receive a refund of the amount you paid, less a cancellation fee. The cancellation  fee will be $10.00 or 10% of the event/trip fee- whichever is more, unless a specific cancellation fee is advertised for the event/trip.

  4. If you cancel and there is no waiting list, or no one on the list takes your place, you will receive a refund of the amount you paid less a cancellation fee and less any expenses that the Club incurs due to your cancellation.

  5. If you arrange for someone not on the waiting list to take your place, you will be responsible for full payment to the Club plus any transfer fees or costs the Club incurs because of the change. Other money transactions are between you and your replacement. You must provide that replacement with a note for the trip leader or you must confirm the replacement directly with the trip leader prior to the event/trip. The person who submits payment must request all refunds from the Executive Board in writing within 60 days after the completion of the event/trip. The Executive Board will review the final financial report from the event/trip and may approve refunds in accordance with this refund policy.

  6. Any member may appeal to the Executive Board for refunds greater than provided by this policy if special circumstances warrant.

  7. There will be no refund for events that are designated as "Fund Raisers" unless they are cancelled or rescheduled by the Club.

Ski, bowling, snowshoe…….
What would you like to do?

It’s your turn to help out the club.  We need someone to be in charge of a snowshoe day, preferably in February, but March would be fine too. Please refer to the article in Snow News from February 2005: http://www.sacramentofagowees.org/Archives/Jan2005NewsletterArchive.htm. It will give you a blueprint on what to do.  Call any board member if you need help.

We are also looking for someone to put together a bowling event.  It will be easy too.  Make a reservation for 4 lanes at a conveniently located bowling alley and then give FaGowees enough time to sign up in advance.  This will give you time to cancel any excess lanes you might have reserved.  The bowling could be followed by a dining event if you like.  Reservations are not available in most bowling alleys Tuesday thru Thursday evenings because of league play.

Hopefully, you can schedule your event in time to get an article in the newsletter!!  Articles are due the 20th of the month; email your article to Jim van Riper.  If not, email Andrea and your email will go out to all our members. Make sure the event doesn’t conflict with any major FaGowee events.

Let’s ski together

Are you interested in skiing with others?  Of course you are!!  Then decide on a day and place you (or you and a friend) want to ski and then email Andrea and your email will be forwarded to the whole membership.  It is SO easy and such a good way to find others to ski with.

Race Corner ~ Andrea Woelfle

Did you miss the first 2 races at Sugar Bowl last month?  Do not despair!  There are plenty (7) more to come.  It’s not too late to buy a race pass.  You will still save a bunch of money if you race more than 3 races.  No FaGowees won but we had lots of fun celebrating the medals of others as we drank beer and laughed with each other.

With all the snow we have this season, this should be YOUR year to race!  You’ll have lost of fun, race against people that ski the same level as you (there are 10 classes), make new friends and really improve your skiing.  Races are $20 each; first time racers are free!

You’ll have a chance to try resorts you might not normally go to.  Also, you get substantial discounts on lift tickets at these resorts on race day.  If you pre-pay for the races, you can register on-line, which means no more dragging yourself out of bed at 5:30 to get yourself to registration by 8:30 am!

It’s not too late to get a race pass; three are still 7 more races.  Please send your  $95 check, made out to the FaGowee Ski Club to FaGowee Ski Club, 4002 Hillcrest Lane, Sacramento CA 95821.  You MUST enclose the waiver form for Sierra League. To save time at future races and enable you to pre-register for races download the resort individual waiver forms which you can download from the Sierra League’s home page:  http://www.sierraleague.com/home.jsp.

Where to Register for Racing
Race registration is between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. at the following locations:

READY TO RIP THE ROAD???

FaGowee Car Rally 2008

Do we know the exact date yet? No! But we will soon and we’ll let you know when we know so you can mark your calendars for probably either Sept. 27-28 or Oct. 4 & 5.  Be sure and tell your friends and any lost FaGowees so they can join in on the trek. The number of participants will be slightly limited so those that will want to be on the road with us should sign up as soon as the tickets become available, probably by early June.  The 2008 Road Rally is one you won’t want to miss!

Dick Persons and Kati White have agreed to chair the 2008 FaGowee Car Rally. We will be joined by a Committee of David & Danielle, Sandy & Fred, Andrea and Norm to plan and pull this off.   We would like to have input from members and helpful suggestions as to where you would like to go. Do you know of any unique, boutique, lovely and not to expensive places the tribe could overnight in say…Napa, Concord, Sonora, Truckee, Santa Rosa, Forest Hill, even Yuba City could be fun! (Yeah…right!) If you haven’t been there before, maybe it’s someplace you’d like to finally stay for a night. The more unique the place, the better.  There could be a prize for you if we end up in the location you’ve suggested.  We do want to stay within a 60 – 80 mile radius or two hour drive home to Sacramento. Want to feel like you’ve actually been away for a weekend? We’ll have that in mind with your suggestions and our planning.

Sorry, but Vegas is a little too far out of the way and the Bay Area is too congested! And, No, we will not be camping. You’ll get to sleep in a real bed with a bathroom very close by! Any other questions?

We want the 2008 Car Rally to be one you’ll never forget so help us out!

 Contact:
Dick Persons OR
Kati White
with your ideas and suggestions.

Let’s give all FaGowees something to look forward to in the Fall of 2008!

2008 Abalone Dive & Dine

WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!
By:  Jim Van Riper

The Abalone Dive & Dine camping trips have been the most attended and most successful events that the FaGowee’s have held for the membership for many years.  This event has been in existence long before I joined the ranks of the FaGowees.  Some have gone down in the FaGowee history books and are more memorable than others, but each one has provided an utterly fantastic time for those who have attended.

Andrea Woelfle did a great job of planning and hosting the Ab Dive in 2007.  Nobody can honestly deny that.  But, for personal reasons, she is unable to host it again this year.  She has laid the ground work for the 2008 Ab Dive next August by already reserving the R/V sites and the campsites, and she has already recruited several divers and cooks to assist in making the 2008 Ab Dive a reality.

What this club needs now is somebody to take the reins from Andrea and make history of their own by hosting this event.  Due to prior commitments to my family, I personally cannot host it this year as I have in past years, but I (as well as many others) am willing and able to assist whoever takes the helm and hosts this event.

Sadly, many of the past annual events the FaGowee’s have presented for the membership have gone by the wayside (houseboat trips, clam digs, etc.) and it would be a real shame to see the Ab Dive join the ranks of the “forgotten” trips.

Think seriously folks.  These events are put together for YOUR enjoyment. Hosting one isn’t really all that hard when you have the help we all have to offer.  But if we don’t have a host, we don’t have an event.  It’s as simple as that.  Hopefully, someone will step up to the plate this year and take their turn at bat.  You won’t be sorry you did.

Please contact Andrea at 916-487-9052 if you have any questions, positive & constructive comments, or if you’d be willing to offer to host this event.

YIKES!! HAVE YOU SEEN THE PRICE OF GAS LATELY???

Do you peer at the price of gas and wonder how you can avoid bankruptcy?  Here are some tips from Richard Dangles, as per Internet sources.

  1. Fill up your car or truck in the morning when the temperature is still cool.  Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground; and the colder the ground, the denser the gasoline. When it gets warmer gasoline expands, so if you're filling up in the afternoon or in the evening, what should be a gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and temperature of the fuel (gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products) are significant. Every truckload that we load is temperature-compensated so that the indicated gallon gage is actually the amount pumped. A one-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for businesses, but service stations don't have temperature compensation at their pumps.

  2. If a tanker truck is filling the station's tank at the time you want to buy gas, do not fill up; most likely dirt and sludge in the tank is being stirred up when gas is being delivered, and you might be transferring that dirt from the bottom of their tank into your car's tank.

  3. Fill up when your gas tank is half-full (or half-empty), because the more gas you have in your tank the less air there is and gasoline evaporates rapidly, especially when it's warm. (Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof membrane to act as a barrier between the gas and the atmosphere, thereby minimizing evaporation.)

  4. If you look at the trigger you'll see that it has three delivery settings:  slow, medium and high. When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to the high setting. You should be pumping at the slow setting, thereby minimizing vapors created while you are pumping. Hoses at the pump are corrugated; the corrugations act as a return path for vapor recovery from gas that already has been metered. If you are pumping at the high setting, the agitated gasoline contains more vapors, which is being sucked back into the underground tank, so you're getting less gas for your money.

Hope this will help ease your 'pain at the pump'
