ANNUAL ABALONE DIVE & DINE
Thursday to Sunday, August 16-19
Andrea Woelfle

It’s not too late but,
Your Money is Due Now!!

(August 3rd)

Why sweat in Sacramento heat when you can enjoy the coast’s moderate weather and beautiful scenery.  Not only will you have fun socializing with the FaGowees and their friends, but you will also have the chance to explore the coastal villages of Ft, Bragg and Mendocino, enjoy the spectacular botanical gardens, ride the Skunk train, kayak, finish that good book, explore the lighthouse or walk on the beach.  And don’t forget the drum rolls, (I mean abalone pounding!)  And then there’s that relaxing glass of wine or mug of beer sitting on the beach or at that new pub you discovered.  Sure it’s fun to cook and camp out, but sampling that seafood at a local restaurant could be an extra treat.

Then, best of all there will be the Saturday night feast with abalone served
the most delicious ways plus chicken for those on special diets.
Let us know in advance if you have special dietary needs.

The club has reserved 14 R/V sites, most with full hookup and 3 large campsites.
Sites are first paid, first allocated.  There are still some good sites left, but hurry!!

If you need to rent an RV (approximately $90 per night, delivered),
call Mary at FBMCC 707 964-0696 www.fbmcc.com

To reserve your spot, send in your money now ($25 members, $35 non- members!)
This covers the feast and the campfire. Your site will be assigned as soon as I receive your money.
Let me know if you plan to come in a day or days early so that I can reserve your spot!

WHERE:
Caspar Beach R/V Park & Campground
14441 Point Cabrillo Dr
Mendocino, CA 95460

River Cats Game

What could be more summery than spending an evening at a River Cats game at Raley Field?

Join us at the game on Thursday, August 23.  Bring a friend! Let’s get there early, around 6:15, so we can all chow down together.  They always have special deals on Thursday nights like $1 hot dogs. If you’re going to be late or get lost, call Andrea on her cell at 508-4254.

It’s cheapest to park downtown and walk 10-15 minutes to get to Raley Field (400 Ball Park Drive in West Sac.) Or you can park there for $6 to $8. The easiest way to get there is to take Business I-80, get off on South River Road and follow the signs. Call Andrea if you want to carpool.  The game starts at 7:05.

The FaGowees have purchased a block of 10 seats and one of those seats could be yours!
The complete price for tickets is only $23.60
.
You need to hurry on this one because these tickets should go fast.

Get your checks in now to:

Pictures Wanted!!!
Bob McDonald

Take pictures of any FaGowees having fun so I can include them in our photo albums. The albums are brought to each and every FaGowee function with the photos of our past events, and I depend on you, the general membership, to supply those photos for the albums.

So...get those pictures taken so I can add them to our archives.

For the sake of ease in creating and displaying the photo pages, I’d prefer the prints to be 4”x 6” in size. Also, I would like them in groups of 6 so that they will take up a whole page in the album.

If you have any questions, or photos you’d like to part with, please contact me at 817-4277.

I’m Looking For Any Pics of Club Activities:

Fall Foothills, Goldpoint, Hopscotch, Halloween Party,
Bike Ride & General Snow Pics.

FaGOWEE FUNCTION OR EVENT SIGN-UP LATE FEES
(Approved and Adopted at the Executive Board Meeting on July 11, 2006)

SIGN-UP LATE FEES: On each and every advertised FaGowee club event published in the Snow News newsletter, a sign-up due date will be listed as well as the member and non-member prices to attend that function or event. Any person who signs up and submits their payment for attendance after that published due date will be assessed a 50% late fee penalty. In addition, any person who does not sign up at all to attend a function or event and just shows up at the door will be assessed a 100% late fee penalty (payable in full at that time) before being allowed admittance to that function or event.

FaGOWEE EVENT / TRIP REFUND POLICY
Revised, Approved and Adopted at the Executive Board Meeting, October 8, 2003

  1. The following Refund Policy applies to any Club event for which a fee is charged.

  2. You will automatically receive a 100% refund fur any trip or event cancelled by the Club.

  3. If you cancel and someone takes your place from the waiting list, you will receive a refund of the amount you paid, less a cancellation fee. The cancellation  fee will be $10.00 or 10% of the event/trip fee- whichever is more, unless a specific cancellation fee is advertised for the event/trip.

  4. If you cancel and there is no waiting list, or no one on the list takes your place, you will receive a refund of the amount you paid less a cancellation fee and less any expenses that the Club incurs due to your cancellation.

  5. If you arrange for someone not on the waiting list to take your place, you will be responsible for full payment to the Club plus any transfer fees or costs the Club incurs because of the change. Other money transactions are between you and your replacement. You must provide that replacement with a note for the trip leader or you must confirm the replacement directly with the trip leader prior to the event/trip. The person who submits payment must request all refunds from the Executive Board in writing within 60 days after the completion of the event/trip. The Executive Board will review the final financial report from the event/trip and may approve refunds in accordance with this refund policy.

  6. Any member may appeal to the Executive Board for refunds greater than provided by this policy if special circumstances warrant.

  7. There will be no refund for events that are designated as "Fund Raisers" unless they are cancelled or rescheduled by the Club.

It’s your turn to share the fun.

The FaGowees have a new policy of having members host fun activities without having to publicize them in the newsletter or get board approval. As long as the event doesn’t conflict with a major FaGowee event, even the sky’s not the limit
(if you’re a sky diver, that is!)

You may have noticed Kati White’s email in July in which she invited FaGowees to come camping with her.
But it could be anything:

a bike ride or kayak adventure you’d like to share with others.
Maybe, you’re looking for others to go on a ski trip, go waterskiing or golfing.
Or maybe attend the Music Circus, a play or concert or spend the day in San Francisco or maybe just take a cooking class.
Maybe you live out of town and want to give FaGowees an opportunity to do something in your neck of the woods.

There are no limits.

Maybe you want to go somewhere or try something new; this is a good opportunity to find like like-minded souls. All you need to do is figure out the dates, costs, extras, like sharing a meal afterwards. You may want to limit the number of attendees; it is all up to you. Then email Andrea Woelfle and your announcement will be emailed to the entire membership! We would like it for you to come to the next social meeting to present your plan, if at all possible. This is a way for you to share your interests and to make the FaGowees a more fun club.

It is also easier to get an official FaGowees event going. You can just e-mail the club president and present your idea. It is possible for the board to discuss it by email and approve it without waiting for a board meeting.

A small contingent of FaGowees are responsible for running the club and planning activities. This is your chance to get involved!!

Discount Tickets

The deadline for returning Homewood & Sugar Bowl Tickets is May 5th, 2007

Each year the club offers members the chance to purchase lift tickets to the most popular North Tahoe resorts at a discount of $2 to $13 off the normal ticket price. Tickets can be pre-ordered in November each year or they can be purchased throughout the season while supplies last. At the end of the season, unused tickets can be turned in for a credit towards the following season. TICKETS MAY NOT BE TURNED IN FOR CASH.
Members need to turn in Homewood and Sugar Bowl tickets by May 5
th. Tickets turned in late will not be accepted. You can turn in your Alpine, Northstar, and Squaw tickets any time before the end of October 2007. Northstar and Squaw tickets are normally good for discounts on summer activities such as golfing, mountain biking, and the spa at the top of the tram.

MOUNT LASSEN/LAVA BEDS GETAWAY
September 20-23

Are you ready for fun?  Are you ready for adventure?
Then sign up now for Don Girard’s excellent travel weekend!
This is not an official FaGowee trip, so all your dealings will be directly with Don.

DEADLINE FOR PAYMENT IS FAST APPROACHING:
AUGUST 30!!  But don’t wait until then!

The itinerary:

Thursday, September 20, 2007
   7:45 am - Leave Sacramento
9:00 am - Meet in Truckee for a hearty,
leisurely breakfast at the Wagon Train Restaurant, which is on Commercial Row, about one block

from the Truckee Hotel (actual address is 10080 Donner Pass Road; take the central Truckee exit to get there)
   10:00 am - Leave Truckee
Stop in Chester for lunch, and then we’ll take a 20 minute drive to Mount Lassen and hike down to Bumpus Hell.   And watch out!  The volcano
could erupt again like it did in 1915!  We’ll watch the hissing fumaroles and boiling mud pots.  (And you will be amazed… this definitely beats
       Yellowstone!)
Then we backtrack a bit to the Lassen Mineral Lodge, This is where we’ll be staying the night.  It’ll be $87/night with two or 3 beds
(which, if you share a room, will work out to $43.50 per person or even less!)

5:00 pm - After we check in we head for the funky bar/restaurant across the street, and relax with libations, all the time admiring the picture of the
half-naked lady.  This will be followed by yet another hearty meal!

Friday, September 21, 2007
9:00 am - Hearty, leisurely breakfast at the neat old ham and egg restaurant next to the Ranch.
10:30 am - We’ll head out to the lava beds
Past Bumpus Hills, to the Devastated Area, where we’ll be Happy not Devastated!  We’ll admire the
pink rocks and hope they don’t slide down on us.  We can’t stop because it is scary and maybe even Dangerous near those rocks!   We’ll pass
through Hat Creek and stop for groceries in Burney.  If you want, we can visit the waterfalls in Burney, where real water boils out of the side of
the cliff.  We’ll admire all the volcanoes along the way and then in Canby for gas and a hearty picnic lunch.

Around 4:00 or 4:30 pm -
We should pull into Lava Beds.  This’ll give us time to visit the Visitors Center and check out the cave next to it.  After
we set up camp in either RV or tent at the Indian Wells campgrounds, a safe haven after that scary Devastated Area!   We’ll prepare for yet
another hearty (potluck) dinner.  Then it will be campfire and ghost stories.   Cost: $10/entrance fee, $10/night.  Trailers that are under 30 feet
are allowed right by the tents, so we can use the trailers for cooking.

Saturday, September 22, 2007
After breakfast, we’ve got a day of exploration and discovery before us at Lava Beds.  You may never have another chance like this to view such magnificent cinder and spatter cones, pit craters and lava tubes caves.  Too bad we won’t have time to explore all 600 caves!  We’ll also drive over and check out Captain Jack’s Stronghold.  In between, we’ll have a relaxing lunch with wine at the campground.  Then, of course, we’ll have another hearty dinner, followed by frivolity and maybe games.

Sunday, September 23, 2007
Delicious breakfast, break camp, then mosey down to Redding to check it out.  We’ll cross the Sundial Bridge, explore the new exhibits at the
Turtle Bay Exploration Park.  Yummy lunch.  Then sail on home and start our diets!

Space is limited!  Hurry to sign up!  Contact Don at 638-7804 to reserve a spot.

Then,

mail your check, made out to Don Girard ($87, or half of $87 or a third of $87, depending) and mail to Don at:
P.O. Box 338
Rancho Cordova, CA 95741

EPPIE’S GREAT RACE RECAP

Eppie’s Great Race is the world’s oldest triathlon, consisting of a 5.82-mile run, a 12.5-mile bike race and a 6.35-mile kayak race.  Eppie Johnson is a former member of the Sacramento FaGowees and the founder of the race.  The proceeds of this event are donated to benefit the Sacramento County Therapeutic Recreational Services.

For almost 30 years, members of the Sacramento FaGowee Ski Club have volunteered their time, efforts and energy at this event to help to make it the success it is today.  This year was no exception.

On Friday evening, July 20, 2007, Dick Parsons, Michael Cobb and Jackie Chesi met at Goethe Park along the American River and helped pass out race packets to this year’s entrants of Eppie’s Great Race.  Those volunteers that were there that evening were rewarded with a spaghetti dinner, including salad and garlic bread provided by The Old Spaghetti Factory.

On Saturday, a new record was set at the 34th running of Eppie’s Great Race.  More than 1900 racers participated as the FaGowees helped make it another successful event.  The FaGowees again volunteered to help at this fun and worthwhile event.

Greeting the racers as they crossed the finish line were Diane Wilson, Greg Holman, Bob McDonald, Ron Tiche, Diane Tiche, Carl Dahl, Suzy Thompson and Bernie Ditter.  After congratulating and welcoming each racer as they crossed the finish line, they removed the racers’ bib strips containing their participant race identification number and directed them to a refreshment area where they were provided with drinks and fruit.  The participant race identification numbers were then passed on to the “stapling team” by those greeters.

Marilyn Miller led a “stapling team” consisting of Linda Trombino, Fred Conjour and Sandy Lange.  They stapled the numbered bib strips to cardboard placards and recorded the finish times showing where the racers placed in the race.  Ann Fajen made innumerable trips running the placards up to the easel boards.  (It’s no wonder that she stays so thin and petite.)

Jackie Chesi led the “recording team” at the easel boards.  Michael Cobb, Andrea Woelfle, Lauri Thompson, Jim Van Riper, Steve Sommers, Chizuko Kawamoto, and Jackie recorded the times from the bib placards onto those boards, which enabled the racers to find out their final finish times and positions.

For their efforts, all of the volunteers were provided with complimentary free coupons for chicken sandwiches, beer, hot dogs, more beer, soft drinks, even more beer and bottled water.

After the race, many of the FaGowees and friends gathered at the home of Diane Wilson for our annual “After the Race Pool Party” where fun, laughter and frivolity abounded.  Even though Eppie Johnson wasn’t able to thank each and every one of us individually, he did send his thanks and appreciation to all who were there to make this race a success again this year.
