August 2006

  ANNUAL ABALONE DIVE & DINE
By Trip Leader:  Jim Van Riper - 916-721-0892 - p2forever@surewest.net

Get away from it all.  Leave the 100+ summer degree heat of home behind and take the scenic route through the California Redwoods to the cooler weather on the coast north of Mendocino.  Join us as we relax among the redwoods and sunbathe on one of the cleanest beaches in Northern California.  Take a ride on the Skunk Train through some of the most pristine redwood forests you'll ever see.  Explore the quaint town of Mendocino, test the libations at the brewpub in Ft. Bragg and join us for a great abalone feast on Saturday night (there will be BBQ chicken for those who have an aversion to abalone).

I have reserved 14 R/V sites, and most have full hookup available.  I will assign sites as I receive your reservation monies, so…  First paid, First Taken.  Be forewarned, you snooze - you lose.  I still have a lot of space for tents for those of you who wish to “rough it.”

WHERE:
Caspar Beach R/V Park & Campground
14441 Point Cabrillo Dr, Mendocino, CA 95460
WHEN:
           Arrive:  Thursday, Aug 17, 2006
           Depart:  Sunday, Aug 20, 2006

 YOUR PARTICIPATION COSTS:

  • R/V Camping Fees:  $33 per night - most sites have full hookups available.  Those staying in R/V sites will be responsible for paying their own camping fees to the R/V Park.  The R/V campers will pay the club the "Saturday Night Dinner Only" fees for their attendance.

  • Tent Camping Fees: Members: $40 ea.     "Wildcard" Guests: $40 ea.    Other guests:  $50 ea.

  • Saturday Dinner Only:  Members: $25 ea.    "Wildcard" Guests:  $25 ea.    Other guests:  $35 ea.

  • Divers:    FREE  (Please note:  "Divers" are defined as those who actually physically go under the water and return with abalone for consumption by the attendees at the Saturday Night Dinner.)

  • Children 15 & under: FREE (Children must be accompanied by an adult)

  • Pets:  The campground charges an additional $2 per night per pet.  It is the responsibility of the pet owner to pay this fee to the park.

PLEASE BRING: Your own firewood & camping equipment, warm clothes as it can be cool (hey - you're at the ocean), lawn chairs, towels, soap, etc.  BYOB!!!  You're on your own for all meals except the Saturday Night Abalone Dinner.

NEARBY THINGS TO DO: Including, but not limited to:  Kayaking sea cave tours, Skunk Train, Botanical gardens, Pt. Cabrillo lighthouse, Mendocino Village, Noyo Harbor Fishing Village, magnificent redwoods, river canoeing, golf & tennis, many fine restaurants, bicycling, scuba diving, fishing, beach combing, shell collecting, horseback riding, blueberry picking and wine tasting at several of the local wineries.

STILL NEEDED: Volunteer Divers, Volunteer Cooks, and lots of Happy Campers.

Prez Says

It’s hard to think of what to say as I begin this issue of “Prez Says” as I have several things on my mind. (Not bad for a mindless individual.) First, I’m melting in the heat of the 103°+ temps and my A/C on the fritz, so my mind is kinda melting away along with the rest of me.

I’m in the final stages of planning the upcoming Annual Abalone Dive & Dine weekend at Caspar Beach, so my mind is wandering in and out of that, and trying to head off any anticipated (or unanticipated) problems that might arise. Please see the advertisement elsewhere in this newsletter for additional information on the Ab Dive.

Also occupying my mind is the final planning stages of a non-FaGowee related trip that I’m putting together. I’m taking my folks to Washington D.C for a week. We will be leaving a couple days after the Ab Dive, so things are a bit rushed and hectic for me right now. I’ve been working for the past 2 years on the planning and putting together a WWII ship’s reunion for the crewmembers of the light cruiser (U.S.S. Oakland CL-95) that my father served on in the South Pacific theater.

And finally… After much thought and discussion at the July Executive Board Meeting, the Board has set up a new “Late Fee Policy” that will become effective for any and all events where the club will need to acquire advance purchases (such as food) or reservations prior to that event. This policy is available for your viewing in another portion of this newsletter. I’ve already had a few gripes and complaints from certain individuals regarding the new “Late Fee Policy”, but most of those who were doing the whining were the type of persons that the new policy was expressly written for. I hope that this will help us to alleviate most of the problems that we’ve experienced in the past.

Just a reminder… We have only 146 shopping day’s left until Christmas. I’m sure many of you will be enjoying skiing on the white slopes before then. I know it will be cooler than the weather we’re currently experiencing.

Pictures Wanted!!!
Bob McDonald

Summer has arrived and so has the opportunity for pictures! Take pictures of any FaGowee’s having fun so I can include them in our photo albums. The albums are brought to each and every FaGowee function with the photos of our past events, and I depend on you, the general membership, to supply those photos for the albums. So...get those pictures taken so I can add them to our archives.

Currently I’m looking for pictures from Yosemite Trip & Family Picnic/Luau!

For the sake of ease in creating and displaying the photo pages, I’d prefer the prints to be 4”x 6” in size. Also, I would like them in groups of 6 so that they will take up a whole page in the album.
If you have any questions, or photos you’d like to part with, please contact me at 817-4277.

EPPIE’S GREAT RACE WAS A SUCCESS
By Jackie Chesi

I want to thank everybody who volunteered their time and energies to help at the finishing line and the timekeeping area on Saturday, July 15th. Our club has been volunteering for over 10 years now and Eppie Johnson (the founder of this triathlon and a former FaGowee member) has personally extended his thanks and gratitude to the volunteers for our clubs’ efforts.

Volunteers included both club members and guests / friends. Thanks to Cynthia Barlow, Norman Benedict, Karen Benedict, Ditter Bernie, Michael Cobb, Chris Corrin, Karl Dahl, John Egure, Ann Fajen, Phyllis Figlioli, Ann Fluts, Alex Glebov, Sandy Lange, Shawn Locket, Bob McDonald, Marilyn Miller, Margaret Norville, Karen Orcutt, Richard Persons, Shirley Schmitt, Laurie Thompson, Linda Trombino, Jim Van Riper, Diane Wilson and Andrea Woelfle.

After the race, many of these volunteers congregated at the home of Diane Wilson for a BBQ & Pool Party. With the temps at 100° +, the pool was a cool and refreshing way to finish off the day.

  1. The following Refund Policy applies to any Club event for which a fee is charged.

  2. You will automatically receive a 100% refund fur any trip or event cancelled by the Club.

  3. If you cancel and someone takes your place from the waiting list, you will receive a refund of the amount you paid, less a cancellation fee. The cancellation  fee will be $10.00 or 10% of the event/trip fee- whichever is more, unless a specific cancellation fee is advertised for the event/trip.

  4. If you cancel and there is no waiting list, or no one on the list takes your place, you will receive a refund of the amount you paid less a cancellation fee and less any expenses that the Club incurs due to your cancellation.

  5. If you arrange for someone not on the waiting list to take your place, you will be responsible for full payment to the Club plus any transfer fees or costs the Club incurs because of the change. 7. There will be no refund for events that are designated as "Fund Raisers" unless they are cancelled or rescheduled by the Club.

**New FaGowee Policy**

FaGOWEE FUNCTION OR EVENT SIGN-UP LATE FEES
(Approved and Adopted at the Executive Board Meeting on July 11, 2006)

BACKGROUND:
We have had constant problems in the past getting people to commit to attending an advertised club function or event where we need to order and purchase enough food and/or accommodations to handle that event. Club members and guests that do not sign up for the event until the very last minute make any required acquisition or purchases and reservations very difficult for those planning and hosting that event. On one occasion, we did not have enough food available to serve all those who attended (or we’ve had a large amounts of food go to waste), and occasionally we’ve had to struggle at the last minute to acquire last-minute hotel accommodations as a result of these late attendee sign ups.
In an attempt to curb this practice in the future, the Executive Board has approved and adopted the following POLICY to be placed in effect immediately. This Policy will be published in each and every edition of the newsletter beginning with the August 2006 issue.

SIGN-UP LATE FEES:

On each and every advertised FaGowee club event published in the Snow News newsletter, a sign-up due date will be listed as well as the member and non-member prices to attend that function or event. Any person who signs up and submits their payment for attendance after that published due date will be assessed a 50% late fee penalty. In addition, any person who does not sign up at all to attend a function or event and just shows up at the door will be assessed a 100% late fee penalty (payable in full at that time) before being allowed admittance to that function or event.

EXCLUSIONS:
Since this new Policy came into being after already being advertised in the Snow News newsletter as an upcoming club event, this policy will not be retroactive and will not pertain to only the following future events currently being planned:

1.   2006 Annual Abalone Dive and Dine Weekend -August 17 to 20, 2006
2.   2006 Annual Gold Point Ghost Town Trip  – October 6 to 9, 2006

It’s Kentucky Derby Night at Cal-Expo!!
Kati White

Want to have a really good time?  Pretend you are at the Kentucky Derby but it's Harness Racing instead of Thoroughbred.
Then put on your craziest, most outrageous, unusual or sensational HAT! (Yes, even the guys gotta wear a hat!*)
Just like they do at the real Kentucky Derby, and join your Hostess, Kati White, at the
Turf Clubhouse at Cal Expo on Saturday, September 9th at 6 pm for an evening of good food,
good laughs and maybe even win some moolah if your pony comes in on the money.

Let's see who can come up with some pretty unusual hat decorations!

* We don't care what the guys decorate their baseball caps with, as long as they are decorated with something! (Beer bottle caps? Eagle Feathers? Old "I Like Ike" buttons?  Ladies, dig into the closet or hit a craft store! Put on your "creative hats" so we can all have a good laugh!

The cost is $32.00 per person, which includes tax and tip, but here's what you get:
Admission to the races, buffet dinner in a reserved area, hospitality package for each participant which includes a souvenir, passes to return, and betting 101 card, VIP ride in the start car during a live race for 2+ guests**, race dedicated to our group's name and presented in the program, personal customized message on the display board in the infield,
professional group photo in the winners circle.

**This is the prize for one gal and one guy who will have been judged to have the best decorated HAT of the evening.

To reserve your place, mail your check for $32.00, made payable to Kati White, 9449 Appalachian Drive, Sacramento, CA. 95827.  I must have your check by no later than Saturday, Sept. 2nd in order to give a head count to the Turf Clubhouse. Sorry, if no check by Sat., Sept. 2nd, you will have missed out on the whole evening of fun and frivolity.
So, get moving and get your check in the mail. 363-9000

See you at the races!!!

Gold Point ~ Don Girard

Little did we know when we first went to Goldpoint that we would become privy to heretofore unknown facts being sought that will figure prominently in the re-trial of the famous "Mormon Will” of Howard Hughes, that is going on at this very moment.

What really happened that fateful knight near Goldpoint that brought into question the authenticity of Howard Hughes’s “Mormon Will”?

Was there skullduggery afoot during the first trial? Was anyone bequeaths by Howard left out? Was Melvin Dumar really a con man and a liar, or was he telling the truth? Was the hand written note authentic, or was it a forgery? Was Howard really found lying face down by the side of a road near Goldpoint? Was there really a femme known as diamond Lil who had a diamond embedded in her tooth and whom Howard frequented for her favors at the Cottontail Ranch, just a bit down the road from Goldpoint? And why did a certain pilot have to leave Las Vegas under mysterious circumstances only to become wealthy in Orange County? Was there a payoff? Were entries in a flight log eradicated, and if so, why?

These questions are burning to be answered.

Can Sheriff Stone be made to talk? Will he spill the beans and disclose “ WHAT EVERYONE ELSE AROUND HERE ALREADY KNOWS!” Will a document be presented to be read?

Follow me to Goldpoint to find out.

Riddle of the month: Where did the word “delta” (as in Sacramento River delta) come from?
Answer to be given at dinner at the Mono Inn in Lee Vining Thursday night.

Send check for $150.00 made out to FaGowee to:
Don Girard at P.O. Box 338, Rancho Cordova, and Ca. 95741.
