Prez Says

The heat is on. It’s been in the triple digits for almost a week now and I’ll bet you skiers are asking yourselves, “When is it going to snow?” Rest assured, it’s coming – but we have a few fun-filled events to present for your entertainment before the white fluff is upon us.
Congratulations to our former club president, Eric “Screaming Eagle” Schmitt for his placing in Eppie’s Great Race triathlon on July 16th. His results are posted in the Eppie’s recap article elsewhere in this newsletter.
On August 11 to 14, we are offering a great camping trip to the northern coast where the weather is cooler than it is at home. The Abalone Dive & Dine in Mendocino is an annual hit among those who like getting away from it all and relax among the redwoods and on the beach. I plan to stay up late on August 11th to watch the free show. Astronomers call it Mother Nature’s Fireworks. Every summer, when Earth crosses paths with Comet Swift-Tuttle, we residents of the Northern Hemisphere are treated to the Perseid meteor shower, an astonishing display of “shooting stars” – as many as 60 an hour. The Perseid's promise to be particularly spectacular this year, thanks to an early-setting first-quarter August moon. The most explosive night? August 11th. That’s when Earth will enter the center of the comet’s orbit. For the best view, get away from the city lights and haze, and grab a brew. The show really pops between 1 am. and 4 am. Yes, that’s way past bedtime, but you may never have a better reason to pull a summer all-niter.
On September 10th, Norm and Karen will host the annual Mystery Car Rally. This event has also been a real hit over the years. The leaders of this rally still decline to give any secrets as to where we will end up for the evening’s festivities, but I have one little clue for you all to ponder: It will be somewhere near the corner of “walk” and “don’t walk.” They have a few available slots if you haven’t signed up for this unforgettable trip.
In October, Don Girard will be leading the annual Gold Point Ghost Town Trip. More information can be found in this newsletter. This trip has really been a lot of fun for all those who have attended in the past.

Stay safe out there, keep your sun block applied and keep cool.

NORTHSTAR and SIERRA DOUBLE WHAMMY GROUP PASS
Tom Parks

Even though it is 100 degrees outside, it is time to plan ahead for the upcoming ski season.
This is the forth year that I am putting together a group to get this great season pass.

The price this year is $379 (unfortunately, a $40 increase from last year) for the first 16 people,
which INCLUDES Vertical Plus. This is a savings of $149 for the same (non-group) pass and Vertical Plus listed on the
web site Vertical Plus is a good deal for shorter lift lines, coupons for free food, and discounts on next years pass.
Adrianne and I have over $300 in free food coupons to use next year, plus we each have the
$50 discount coupon for the season pass.

The season pass is good EVERY DAY at Sierra and every day except 12 holiday blackout dates at Northstar.
You can check the details at the Northstar/Sierra web site:
http://www.northstarattahoe.com
http://www.sierratahoe.com/

The regular group price is $399 but the group gets a free pass with a minimum of 15 paid group members.
I am amortizing the free pass over the first 16 people to join.

For more details, email me at: tfparks@comcast.net or call 391-3160

Mail a check for $379, or $329, form & your $50 voucher, IF you are among the first 16 people to:
Tom Parks
759 Shoreside Drive
Sacramento, CA 95831

GOLDPOINT
Well, poor Sheriff Stone. He had to quit his job in Las Vegas to patrol
the streets of Goldpoint. Serious lawbreakers are arriving and cruising
the town. Trouble right there in Goldpoint. At any rate I'm sure he will
be able to keep the situation under control. That's why the rates have
ballooned up. At any rate I'm sure most of you can bite the bullet and
cough up the extra dough.

Things are going to be a little different this year. We will
arrive at Lee Vining by 7:00 PM on Thursday the 13th of Oct., and rather
than eat at The Mono Inn, we will eat at the Carson Peak Inn on the June
Lake loop for a change of scene. In the morning we will walk across the street to Nicely's for breakfast.
Then on to Goldpoint. Most of you know the way from Mono to Goldpoint by now so there is no need to follow me.
Besides, I have run out of side trips unless some of you want to see the Alabama Hills just below Mt. Whitney,
about a 2 ½ hour detour. But there is time.

I am going to stop at Schatz's and get a box lunch to eat along the way. I am going to head in to the
north end of Death Valley and from there take the hot, dry, dusty and treacherous Rattlesnake Gulch Ravine Road
up to the west side of Mt. Magruder and then speed on towards Goldpoint, entering it from the North by Northwest
rather than the North. You are welcome to follow me and eat dust if you desire.

As before, everyone pays the same price regardless of accommodations. First come, first served. Last ones
to sign up have to sleep up in the barn with the owls.........AND THE ARE BIG..........AND THEY DO NOT LIKE HUMANS!
So, send me a check for $144.00 per person to:
Don Girard
  P.O. Box 338
              Rancho Cordova, Ca 95741

Make your own reservations in Lee Vining. Stay at:
Gateway…………760/647-6467
(preferred place, where we stayed previously)
Lakeview lodge…760/647-6543

EPPIE’S GREAT RACE

The Tradition Continues…
By: Jim Van Riper

On Saturday, July 16th, the running of the 2005 Eppie’s Great Race was held along the scenic American River Parkway in Sacramento and Rancho Cordova. This is the world’s oldest triathlon. It began at William Pond Park and consisted of a 5.82-mile run, followed by a 12.5-mile bike ride and a 6.3-mile boat-paddling event. Prior to his retirement, the race’s founder, Eppie Johnson, was a long time member of the Sacramento FaGowee’s. This triathlon has been in existence for 32 years now, and this was the 16th year that the Sacramento FaGowee’s have been involved in filling some of the more than 700 volunteer positions needed to make this race the success it has been over the years.
At the finish line on the banks of the American River at Goethe Park, Jackie Chesi coordinated the 19 FaGowee’s that volunteered to welcome and greet the race contestants as they crossed the finish line, took their race bib numbers and gave them their official race times. Jackie also coordinated the additional 6 FaGowee volunteers who worked at the staging area, posting the contestants’ team numbers and their times as they came in. We welcome first-timers Margaret Norville, Lori Christoffel and Liz Haemmel to the ranks of the now official veteran FaGowee’s that volunteer for this worthwhile event, and we thank each and every FaGowee who so unselfishly volunteered their time again this year.
Incidentally, this year, (for the first time) our own Past President, Eric “Screaming Eagle” Schmitt was one of the race contestants. His team was comprised of himself and two of his co-workers: Chance Howell (the runner), Dave Buck (the bicyclist) and Eric (our kayaker). Their team overall time was 2 hours, 21 minutes and 10 seconds. This overall time earned them 8th place of the 14 teams competing in the Touring/Slalom Class, and 309th place of the 390 total competing teams overall. Great work guys!!! Eric is hoping to recruit a 3-person team totally comprised of Sacramento FaGowee’s for next year’s race. If you’re interested, contact Eric for more information.
Eppie’s Great Race has generated more than $700.000 for charity. This year’s proceeds will be donated to the Sacramento County Therapeutic Recreational Services. This is a unit of the County of Sacramento, Department of Regional Parks that provide services over 20,000 individuals ages five to adult with mental, physical, developmental, sensory, emotional impairments and special needs. Services are provided in small group, large group and one-to-one settings and are offered at various community sites and in-home for clients unable to attend other programs. Types of programs offered include social clubs, camps, classes, special events, sports and fitness, travel and vocational training programs. Specially trained staff members work with clients to teach leisure, social, community and independent living skills. The skill training received promotes a client’s independent lifestyle, and helps prepare them for participation in regular community activities.
After the morning’s race activities were finished, most of the volunteers congregated at the home of Diane Wilson for a potluck BBQ, and we beat the 105° heat by soaking ourselves in the pool. Eppie’s next Great Race will be held on Saturday, July 15, 2006. I hope you will be able to join in on all the fun that we have at the finish line of the race and at the inevitable BBQ / pool party that will happen afterwards.
