AN ADVANCED WARNING:

Please be forewarned in advance that this is NOT a modern luxury cruise liner.
It is a restored WWII Liberty Ship.  This ship has NO facilities for the physically handicapped,
and climbing from one deck to another involves the use of steep stairwells and/or ladders.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SHIP:

Jeremiah O’Brien was born in Ireland and immigrated to Maine.  He fought on the side of the United States, capturing several British warships and using them against the British naval forces during the Revolutionary War.  After being captured by the British, he was transported as a prisoner of war to England, where he promptly escaped (or just walked out unopposed) from his prison camp.  He escaped to Australia and immediately returned to the United States to continue his fight against the British navy, thus becoming the first ever U.S. Naval war hero.  The Liberty Ship SS Jeremiah O’Brien was named after him.

Before WWII, shipbuilding in the U.S. was not a major industry.  But with the German U-Boats sinking ships off the east coast within sight of land, England on her knees, and the Japanese conquering Asia and the Western Pacific, it was essential to build a large, strong US Merchant Marine to carry combat supplies and materials to the Allied fighting forces.  Eighteen shipyards built Liberty Ships, and one-third of the building workforce was women.  Without these ships, the Allies simply could not have won the war.

The WWII Liberty Ship SS Jeremiah O’Brien was built in 56 days in Portland, Maine and was launched on June 19, 1943.  She is a 441-foot cargo ship veteran of the Normandy invasion.  She is fully restored and maintained in her original condition, and is operated by an all-volunteer crew.  She is as functional today as when she served as a key component of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Bridge of Ships’ during WWII.  The SS Jeremiah O’Brien is a mobile museum and is the only vessel present at the invasion of Normandy in 1944 to return fifty years later for the 50th anniversary of D-Day in 1994.  The ship is registered as a National Historic Landmark, and her triple expansion reciprocating steam engine is registered as a National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark.

Of the 2710 Liberty Ships originally build during WWII, only the SS Jeremiah O’Brien (located in San Francisco) and the SS John Brown (located in Maryland) still exist in their original as-built condition and configuration today.

Prez Says
Our general elections are fast approaching. Be sure to attend and cast your vote at the General Meeting at Norm & Karen’s home on May 23rd. You should be aware that you will see a new make-up to the
Executive Board when it takes office on June 1st.
At the May 24, 2005 General Meeting, a proposal was presented, a vote was taken and the proposal was overwhelmingly approved by the general membership in attendance at that meeting to amend the make-up of the Executive Board. The change is to become effective on June 1, 2006. In a nutshell, the amendment to the Constitution approved at that May 24th meeting changed ARTICLE II, Section 1 to provide for elections only for the Board positions of President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. It also provides for the positions of Activity Director (formerly the “Social” and “Trip” Chairpersons), Membership Director, Communications Director & Webmaster (formerly the Newsletter Editor), Race Chair and Historian to all be appointed by the President, with the approval of the other elected Board members.
Marilyn Miller, Bob McDonald and Diane Wilson have all graciously agreed to serve as members of the Elections Nominations Committee. If one of them approaches you to ask if you would be willing to serve as a member of the Executive Board, please respond with kindness, dignity and respect. Being approached and asked to serve by one of these committee members is an honor and a sign of respect to you.
In the past, I’ve asked several members if they’d be willing to serve as an Executive Board Director for this club. Several of those I asked said they wouldn’t run for office until it snowed in Sacramento. Well, guess what??? It was snowing at 4:00 am in Sacramento last Sunday morning (March 12th). So to those who told me that (and you know who you are), I now say to you to “It’s time to put your nomination where your mouth is.” This club needs some dedicated members with fresh ideas to serve on the Executive Board.

Stay safe out there. And one quick last thought…

SPRING PICTURES WANTED!!!
By: Bob McDonald

Celebrate Spring with pictures! Then I can include them in our photo albums. The photo album is brought to each and every FaGowee function with the photos of our past events, and I depend on you, the general membership, to supply those photos for the albums. If you have any pics of any FaGowee’s having fun, please get them to me so I can add them to our archives.  For the sake of ease in creating and displaying the photo pages, I’d prefer the prints to be 4”x 6” in size. If you have any questions of photos you’d like to part with, please contact me at 916-817-4277.

EXECUTIVE BOARD ELECTIONS
ARE APPROACHING!!

By: Jim Van Riper

The election for your 2006 / 2007 FaGowee Executive Board will be held at the General Meeting on May 23rd.  The FaGowee Constitution requires that your President appoint a 3-person Election’s Committee to solicit and accept nominations for Board positions from the club membership.  At my request, Marilyn Miller, Bob McDonald and Diane Wilson have all graciously agreed to serve in that capacity.
If you know of any club members that are willing and able to serve for a term in a position on the Executive Board, please contact one of these three committee members and make your nomination to them.  (Please don’t shoot them if they approach you and inquire as to your interest in serving on the Board.)
Marilyn, Bob and Diane all have been active in this club and worked hard and selflessly to improve it in many ways over the years, and I am personally thanking each and every one of them for accepting this appointment and again serving the club in such an important capacity.

OCCASION: Cinco de Mayo Potluck Party & BBQ
DATE / TIME: Friday, May 5, 2006 at 6:30 pm
CONTACT: Diane Wilson’s hacienda ~ 361-3140

Diane Wilson has graciously offered to open her home to all FaGowee’s and their guests so we can do what we usually do best…

Can you say (or “grupo fiesta”)

We know that the FaGowee’s have never really needed a reason to party, but occasionally it helps.  And celebrating Cinco de Mayo is a great reason to have a no-host Pot-luck Party and BBQ.  Diane also has a pool that will be available for those who wish to brave the still-cold elements of spring and jump in.  But please be advised that there will not be a sober lifeguard on duty (or anyone else in their right mind for that matter) to save you from your lack of judgment
if you do decide to be foolish enough to do that
.

YOU BRING: BYOB
                     Your own meat to BBQ
Your favorite Mexican hot side-dish to share

CLUB SUPPLIES: Chips and salsa
                             Plates, tableware and napkins
A hot BBQ for you to cook your own main dish

This will definitely be a time of fun and laughter, so don’t be left out.
We hope to see you all there.

It’s volunteer time again.  Mark your calendars and plan to join us as the FaGowee’s volunteer again to help serve the Sacramento County Adaptive Leisure Services by working at the finish line at Eppie’s Great Race, the world’s oldest triathlon. This event is 33 years old this year.  Many of our faithful club members have served in this capacity for over 10 years and we have always had a great time.

FaGowee members “man” (or to be politically correct – “person”) the finish line.  We greet and congratulate the athletes as they arrive at the finish line, remove their bib numbers, staple their tags and record the overall times of the individual contestants or teams.

For our efforts, we receive a T-shirt (SM to XXL), free drink and free food coupons and a free parking permit.  We also receive an abundance of “Thank You’s” from many of the contestants and from the officials.  After the race, we will meet at Diane Wilson’s home for a BBQ and Pool Party.

Last year, our own then-President Eric Schmitt competed in the kayaking portion of this event, and he did quite well.  If you were interested, Eric would like to get a FaGowee team together to compete this year.  He will again participate in the kayak portion of the race, but he needs someone who’s willing to run and another to bike those portions of this event.  Contact Eric Schmitt at 916-782-3158 if you are interested in putting together an official FaGowee Eppie’s Great Race Team.

Race Corner
Andrea Woelfle

Well. It’s the end of the race season. Sigh.

Races have gone quite smoothly this year, except for last GS race at Northstar when the backside lift went out of commission and the lower course race had to be postponed to the next day. The upside was that those stuck at the bottom of the lift got compensatory free lift tickets.

The gold medal winners for the last 4 races, at Northstar and at Diamond Peak,
were Jack Love, Mark Hadley and Andrea Woelfle.

Congratulations to you all!!

NorCals are March 30-April 2 at Alpine Meadows

Discount Tickets

Each fall the Sacramento FaGowee Ski Club offers club members the opportunity to purchases lift tickets for North Tahoe ski resort at a discount (usually about $10 off the regular price). The best part is that unused tickets may be turned in at the end of the season by the posted deadline for a credit towards the next season. The deadline for pre-orders for this season has come and gone.
