Please be forewarned in advance that this is
NOT a modern luxury cruise liner. A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SHIP: Jeremiah O’Brien was born in Ireland and immigrated to Maine. He fought on the side of the United States, capturing several British warships and using them against the British naval forces during the Revolutionary War. After being captured by the British, he was transported as a prisoner of war to England, where he promptly escaped (or just walked out unopposed) from his prison camp. He escaped to Australia and immediately returned to the United States to continue his fight against the British navy, thus becoming the first ever U.S. Naval war hero. The Liberty Ship SS Jeremiah O’Brien was named after him. Before WWII, shipbuilding in the U.S. was not a major industry. But with the German U-Boats sinking ships off the east coast within sight of land, England on her knees, and the Japanese conquering Asia and the Western Pacific, it was essential to build a large, strong US Merchant Marine to carry combat supplies and materials to the Allied fighting forces. Eighteen shipyards built Liberty Ships, and one-third of the building workforce was women. Without these ships, the Allies simply could not have won the war. The WWII Liberty Ship SS Jeremiah O’Brien was built in 56 days in Portland, Maine and was launched on June 19, 1943. She is a 441-foot cargo ship veteran of the Normandy invasion. She is fully restored and maintained in her original condition, and is operated by an all-volunteer crew. She is as functional today as when she served as a key component of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Bridge of Ships’ during WWII. The SS Jeremiah O’Brien is a mobile museum and is the only vessel present at the invasion of Normandy in 1944 to return fifty years later for the 50th anniversary of D-Day in 1994. The ship is registered as a National Historic Landmark, and her triple expansion reciprocating steam engine is registered as a National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark.
Of the 2710 Liberty Ships originally build during WWII, only the
SS Jeremiah O’Brien (located in San Francisco) and the
SS John Brown (located in Maryland) still exist in their
original as-built condition and configuration today. |

Says Our general elections are fast approaching. Be sure to attend and cast your vote at the General Meeting at Norm & Karen’s home on May 23rd. You should be aware that you will see a new make-up to the Executive Board when it takes office on June 1st. At the May 24, 2005 General Meeting, a proposal was presented, a vote was taken and the proposal was overwhelmingly approved by the general membership in attendance at that meeting to amend the make-up of the Executive Board. The change is to become effective on June 1, 2006. In a nutshell, the amendment to the Constitution approved at that May 24th meeting changed ARTICLE II, Section 1 to provide for elections only for the Board positions of President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. It also provides for the positions of Activity Director (formerly the “Social” and “Trip” Chairpersons), Membership Director, Communications Director & Webmaster (formerly the Newsletter Editor), Race Chair and Historian to all be appointed by the President, with the approval of the other elected Board members. Marilyn Miller, Bob McDonald and Diane Wilson have all graciously agreed to serve as members of the Elections Nominations Committee. If one of them approaches you to ask if you would be willing to serve as a member of the Executive Board, please respond with kindness, dignity and respect. Being approached and asked to serve by one of these committee members is an honor and a sign of respect to you. In the past, I’ve asked several members if they’d be willing to serve as an Executive Board Director for this club. Several of those I asked said they wouldn’t run for office until it snowed in Sacramento. Well, guess what??? It was snowing at 4:00 am in Sacramento last Sunday morning (March 12th). So to those who told me that (and you know who you are), I now say to you to “It’s time to put your nomination where your mouth is.” This club needs some dedicated members with fresh ideas to serve on the Executive Board. Stay safe out there. And one quick last thought… READ YOUR NEWSLETTER
SPRING PICTURES WANTED!!! By: Bob McDonald Celebrate Spring with pictures! Then I can include them in our photo albums. The photo album is brought to each and every FaGowee function with the photos of our past events, and I depend on you, the general membership, to supply those photos for the albums. If you have any pics of any FaGowee’s having fun, please get them to me so I can add them to our archives. For the sake of ease in creating and displaying the photo pages, I’d prefer the prints to be 4”x 6” in size. If you have any questions of photos you’d like to part with, please contact me at 916-817-4277. |

Come
and join your brother & sister FaGowee’s at our 3rd
Annual FaGowee Family Picnic. This year’s outing is being combined
with our Annual Luau. The
Luau has traditionally been a fundraiser to help support your race team,
and this year is no exception. Rancho Seco Recreational Area is located
adjacent to SMUD’s former nuclear power plant. There is a 160-acre
fresh-water lake, large lawn areas and a large clean sandy beach. R/V
and tent camping sites are available for those who might want to come
earlier or stay longer. THE CLUB WILL PROVIDE: BBQ pork ribs and hot dogs, the sandwich buns and condiments, potato salad, macaroni salad, baked beans, a sheet cake, a variety of soft drinks & bottled water, the plates, cups & eating utensils. YOU NEED TO BRING: Your friends and family (yes, your kids and grandkids are welcome). Bring your own adult beverages. If you would like to bring your favorite side dish to share, I’m sure it would be greatly appreciated. Bring your ball gloves, bats and a ball for a softball game, your horseshoes, your Frisbees, your swimsuits, your kayaks or canoes and your fishing poles. ADDITIONAL THINGS TO DO: Rancho Seco Recreational Area offers everybody a wide variety of things to do for their enjoyment.
DIRECTIONS: From Sacramento, take Highway 99 south to the Twin Cities Road/Highway 104 exit. Go east for 15 miles on Highway 104 to the Rancho Seco Park exit. Take the first right after passing the two towers to the park entrance. We’re looking forward to seeing you there. “AFFAFFA” |
Get away from it all. Leave the 100+ summer degree heat of home behind and take the scenic route through the California Redwoods to the cooler weather on the coast north of Mendocino. Join us as we relax among the redwoods and sunbathe on one of the cleanest beaches in Northern California. Take a ride on the Skunk Train through some of the most pristine redwood forests you'll ever see. Explore the quaint town of Mendocino, test the libations at the brewpub in Ft. Bragg and join us for a great abalone feast on Saturday night (there will be BBQ chicken for those who have an aversion to abalone). I have reserved 14 R/V sites, and most have full hookup available. I will assign sites as I receive your reservation monies, so… First paid, First Taken. Be forewarned, you snooze - you lose. I still have a lot of space for tents for those of you who wish to “rough it.” WHERE: WHEN: Caspar Beach R/V Park
& Campground Arrive: Thursday, Aug 17, 2006
YOUR PARTICIPATION COSTS:
PLEASE BRING: Your own firewood & camping equipment, warm clothes as it can be cool (hey - you're at the ocean), lawn chairs, towels, soap, etc. BYOB!!! You're on your own for all meals except the Saturday Night Abalone Dinner. NEARBY THINGS TO DO: Including, but not limited to: Kayaking sea cave tours, Skunk Train, Botanical gardens, Pt. Cabrillo lighthouse, Mendocino Village, Noyo Harbor Fishing Village, magnificent redwoods, river canoeing, golf & tennis, many fine restaurants, bicycling, scuba diving, fishing, beach combing, shell collecting, horseback riding, blueberry picking and wine tasting at several of the local wineries.
